My words...
All about Japanese poetry...
Japanese poetry can come in numerous forms. The four that I am currently learning about are: Tanka, Choka, Hokku (haiku), and Renga. Tanka was composed of five lines with a syllable scheme of 5,7,5,7,7. A chain of interlocking tanka is called a Renga. Each tanka within a renga was divided into 17 and 14 syllables. A renga was also usually opened with a hokku or more commonly known as today as a haiku. Haikus consist of three line with a scheme of 5,7,5 syllables. The last form, Choka, has an unlimited number of lines. This kind of petry alternates betwwen 5 and 7 syllables. It is my hope to learn how to write using these four different forms. Although i have already made about 26 haikus, I have recently learned that my definition of a haiku was corrupted by google. For some time i thought a haiku could be three or fours lines and either 5,7,5 syllables or 5,7,7,5. Apparently, google lies sometimes and many americans who try to use this form have had a very warped graps of the subject. I onl recenty foudn out the truth behind japanese poetry in my english class. Thankfully we are learning about japanese literature so maybe one day, when i have a firm graps on the poetry, i will start to write different kinds of japanese style works. For now, i will excercise my mind on writing in the four styles mentioned and display in this journal for you to read and enjoy. Now you know more about japanese poetry and i hope you enjoy reading my poems.
