- There's really nothing special about the "new year" beginning.
What is a year, but a period of time poorly determined by a bunch of dead people?
In all reality, it means nothing.
However, we find it an excuse to celebrate (anything to justify that next shot?), make promises to ourselves that we hope to keep, and fear we won't, and take a day from work.
I'm not arguing with the validity of any of those things.
...especially the work part. ;D
But if in knowing that the day is truly meaningless, what reason should I have to continue its traditions?
Symbolism.
As a philologist, I am familiar with what it means.
As a practicing witch, I use it in many of my craftings, it adds concentration, and therefore strength. It brings the intent into focus.
And so I know better than to think that the symbolism is pointless.
Instead, I believe that I will use this chance to do what has become expected...I will make fresh starts, new beginnings, and attempt to improve who I am and how I live.
It won't be a perfect journey, but it never is. And I wouldn't want it to be. What would I learn from that?
