The unforgiving sun beat down on the small avenue, gleaming on the unnatural metallic hide of the only car racing on the dirt road. Even the small eddies swirled up by those roaring wheels caused no satisfaction. It was just too hot.

There was nary a cloud in the sky to cover the bright midmorning blaze. But even so, a shadow passed under the sun, blocking the heat for a minute. The young man driving the blue Mercedes clutched the trinket he was holding tighter.

The silver dragon winced as she passed over the sun, alerting the human in the car, but she couldn’t stop. She needed what she had come for. That devil of a mage, cursed Shaydra Silversky as she flapped her wings to gain elevation. He stole the Charm! Of course, I should have expected it, with the worlds so close, but still…

The man in the Mercedes looked up anxiously. He knew what had caused the shade. He identified all of the telltale signs of a dragon in the sky. He needed to capture the Charm Keeper, fast, or she would catch him and stun him with one of her dreadful star spells. The young man stepped on the pedal and tried to drive faster, cursing when the weak engine groaned.

Shaydra expanded her mind to try to sense the Charm. It would emit a special kind of magic that couldn’t be hindered by barriers or spells. She found it in the blue German car, held by the same man she had seen near her cave. The dragon smiled, revealing a feral grin. The hunt was on, but who was the prey?

The mage – for that was who the man was – swore in a human way and revved up. But he knew he would have to pull over and fight the dragon eventually.

He turned the steering wheel with a violent jerk, driving off the road and into the forest which surrounded the dirt boulevard. The Mercedes trundled on, fighting the woodland, until it ground to a stop, blocked by rocks he definitely couldn’t drive over. He slowly got out of the car, dropping the Charm into a pouch strapped to his waist, and turned to face the silver wyvern that had alighted on a boulder barely two yards away.

Without warning, trying to catch the mage off-guard, Shaydra sprung for the young man’s throat. But the mage was ready.

He shape-shifted rapidly into a griffon and leapt out of the way, clawing Shaydra as she landed and turned around. The dragon received the slash full in the face but ignored it, summoning and throwing a small star as blood streamed down her snout.

The mage, unprepared, got hit by the astral energy. The smell of burned feathers permeated the air and the mage winced, clacking his beak angrily, which gave Shaydra an opportunity to leap at him and pin him down. She batted him on the head with a claw to stun him and reached for the griffon’s neck.

The mage screeched. He had to prevent the wyvern from getting the Charm. But how? Then he remembered that Silversky had a friend, a golden dragon.

The griffon suddenly shifted into a huge golden dragon, and his eyes stared into Shaydra’s, pleading mockingly for mercy. The silver dragon hesitated, and in that moment, the mage threw her off with gargantuan strength and slapped a heavy paw on her head, knocking Shaydra unconscious.

He laughed. Fools like her always stopped for a loved one. He slung the limp wyvern over his shoulder and took flight, spiraling high enough to be mistaken for a golden bird. He would have killed her, but he needed her soul.
