Forgotten (Part 1)

A man sat on a wooden bench engraved with initials of past lovers. He sat alone with no one but the stars above. The stars glimmered with promises of hope and joy yet he saw none. The cold air engulfed his very being in order to calm his frantic mind but he could not feel the cool crisp autum air. All his attention was focused on a single picture gripped in his hands. He stared at it as if he were possessed. His eyes couldn't look away from his past. A single name popped into his head everytime he tried to remember who this person was.

"Martha....." he said with a trembling voice. Tear drops fell from his face glistening with forgotten memories. "Who are you? Why do I cry at the mere mention of your name?"

You don't remember do what happened. A gentle voice echoed in his head.
"Am I suppose to remember?"
If you want these feelings of dread to vanish then remember what she meant to you. Close your eyes.

He closed his eyes and welcomed the lurking darkness within his heart. As he embraced this potent darkness, a lost memory rose from the depths of his mind. Something about this memory felt so unnatural and heartbreaking. He couldn't see all the details clearly. All he could see was himself.

"What was I doing?"
You were standing in the rain.
"Why?"
Because you were crying.
"Were you there?"
I was right beside you.
"I can't remember."
Everyone forgets.
Why can't I remember? Was the pain so great?"
.........

He noticed that someone was there. Before he could see who it was a bright light woke him from his slumber. The sun had risen and night was gone.

"Dreams...." He stood up and walked away from the raidiant sun rise leaving the picture behind.
