This is a story I wrote for the ruins thread. It was a lot of fun to write, and I got a wig out of it!

In the beginning of eternity, when objects were so new and unnamed that a gesture was necessary in order to identify them, three animals wandered the earth. A snake, a bird, and a man. They lived in the lands where you have come upon this temple. It was deemed necessary that knowledge should be obtained about the world. The snake spoke of desiring knowledge of the sea, and so swam beneath it. The bird spoke of a longing to know more of the sky, and so flew through it. The man yearned to know how to better make the trees and rocks obey him, so he traveled the earth.

Each creature gained unspeakable amounts of knowledge. They learned of good and evil. They learned of life, death, black, white, love, hate, and especially of power. After learning of power, the creatures returned to their land, forever changed. Where there had once been brotherhood, there was now a silent competition masquerading as friendliness. They each asked the others about their adventures. Snake spoke first, telling of the unnamable multitudes hiding beneath the waves, and how they told him of life without air. The bird immediately objected, having spent years in the air. He yelled that life must have air, or there could be no breath. The man nodded in agreement. The snake, realizing that each of the three creatures had grown apart, was saddened.

But each had learned of power, and while the other two spoke, took their knowledge for himself and hoarded it away between his ears. But when it came to be each creature's turn to speak, he left the one chief secret of the domain in his heart. Each thought that if the secret did not pass their tongue, then their realm shall forever be indomitable.

With time, the three settled back into the lands you now know. However, the snake stayed partial to the rivers, the bird to the treetops and mountain ledges, and the man to the ground. They each fashioned minions in their image. The snake formed countless more scaled creatures of incredible shape and size. The man formed multitudes of four legged creatures to entertain himself. The bird, more vain, formed armies in his own image, although variations of color and size did occur.

Thousands of years passed. Soon, everything was named, including the immortal three. The man took the name Ythle, the bird became Kair, and the snake took up the moniker of Glis.

Since their vast knowledge had kept them immortal and powerful, Ythlek, Kair and Glis rarely showed their faces among their creations, wishing not to be cast out as monsters. But for thousands of years, the tiny ember of desire for power burned in each of the three's hearts. With time, it became more pronounced, as Ythlek's creations began to hunt Kair's and Glis'. In return, both Kair and Glis waged war with their creations upon the other two.

In the middle of the war, Ythlek ambushed Glis and demanded his secret, for he knew in his heart that the other two had kept secrets.

Glis surrendered his secret, in hopes of being spared his life. But Ythlek cast him into the underworld, where he has ruled for thousands of years. Kair expressed incredible sorrow and outrage at the actions of Ythlek, but Ythlek only struck at Kair's wings and broke them, demanding his secret. Kair spoke softly as he gave the last piece of knowledge of the world to Ythlek, and with that, he was thrown into the sky, where he has managed the heavens for thousands of years.

Having obtained knowledge of the world, but being crushed by the fact that he could not venture underwater for lack of air, nor soar the sky for lack of wings, Ythlek became a hollow and conceited man. He knew all, but had no one with which to share this knowledge. Soon, he took up a habit of speaking only to himself, out loud. He took to forming little creatures in the form of himself, which were the first humans. He gave the humans permission to destroy any creation of himself, Kair, or Glis. And so the vengeful dopplegangers of Ythlek took to the earth.

And so the three Gods were born. Kair the Broken of the sky, Ythlek the Malice-filled of the earth, and Glis the Everdead of the underworld.

This also is why men and all creatures of the earth are so dangerous. They are filled with Ythlek's and the other vengeful Gods' spirits.
