I woke up this morning to Megaman, and Abby, the inside dog licking my forehead. I don't know what's with this dog, one minute she loves me, and then she'll bark at me just for walking down the hallway. Now she's giving me a wake-up call because I won't get off the floor since I couldn't get to sleep on the couch this morning. Kelly and my Grandma are sitting on the couch with Sophia, and I felt disoriented.
While we're on the subject of Abby, let me tell you about her and the other two dogs, Annabelle and Molly. First off, Abby is a little Cocker Spaniel that's the only inside dog, and from what everyone says I should be glad she's not biting me, because apparently she doesn't take too well to strangers, but maybe she knows I like dogs. Come to think of it, all the dogs in this area are friendly, you can walk or ride right by them and they won't so much as bat an eye at you, the Las Vegas dogs are all full of crap, bark and no bite.
Annabelle is a big ol' Bloodhound, but she stays outside all the time, I guess because she's so big. She's also missing her back left leg. The story goes, her previous owner let a chain that had wrapped around her leg stay like that for 5 days, and when they gave Annabelle to my grandparents, it had gotten all gangrene and infected, so they had to have it amputated. The poor girl just moseys about the yard all day, and sleeps in the garage.
Molly's better off, but she's older and stays outside too, because she's got fleas, and you can't get rid of them out here. She's supposed to be in her teens, which is old for a dog, but I don't think she's got a lot more time here either. But they're nice dogs, and they wouldn't hurt a fly.
When I had settled in, getting ready and all, someone was at the door, and it was the guy to deliver the cake we had ordered for Sophia's Christening. It was a humongous cake, but Kelly had planned to have a little luncheon after Church. Grandma had ordered from a lady in town who specializes in it, she says that she had made all the gradutation cakes for Kelly and her siblings as well, so I'm impressed at this lady's baking skills.
When that was all sorted, the plan was to take everything to the church to stick it in the kitchen, but we had to go to Bill's to pick up the Meat and Relish Trays we had ordered so we could have sandwiches with the cake and maybe some coffee or tea.
Thos trays were huge and real heavy like the cake too, but we managed. The guy who was helping us out was a man named Leonard, and this man has a heart of gold to have helped us out as much as he did. We went through the rehearsal of the baptism, he summed up what was gonna go down, and my dad started to explain my job as cameraman.
I don't know if you know the whole setup of a Baptism, and I'm not so religious that I'm gonna get so deep into it, but I'll give you the gist. Kelly and my dad were going to stand with the pastor and make Sophia a child of Christ, by pouring Holy Water on her head. They were to make vows to protect her and teach her the ways of God, and the Sponsors, who would be the witnesses to the Baptism, a.k.a. my Aunt and Uncles, would pledge that if any time my parents couldn't fulfill their duties (like, say they pass away) they would care for Sophia, a.k.a. be her Godparents.
My job as cameraman would be to tape this whole ceremony, so my dad was taking me through the motions, and I started stressing out about it. When that was over, we went to Sullivan's to actually get the film this day, and my dad tried to check RadioShack to see if he could get a tape for his video camera. The place was empty, and I'm guessing we were probably his best and only customers, because I noticed he had games on his Cashier computer, but I got to play Tetris on the display keyboards, so I don't care.
When we got back, Meghan had to do her homework, so I automatically became her study buddy, but I got whisked away becaue my dad wanted me to go out with him to see Grandpa's Racing Pigeons. Yes, I said pigeons.
The people in this area don't get out much for being country folk, but apparently it's a big thing, with magazines and websites and everything. I could never do it though, working outside so much for stuff like that, and then he tells us stories about losing a bunch to raccoons and snakes, I just couldn't take it especially when I stepped on a stray pigeon's foot. He had a hawk trap set up, and the thing was supposed to trick the hawk into thinking he could get the pigeon, but he wouldn't be able to get out.
But yeah, the yard and garage area is a wreck. I could never live this way, and it some parts I love this area, but I couldn't survive, I'm too spoiled and accustomed to an easier life.
When I got back inside, Meghan asked me to help her study her spelling words for school on Monday. She's in 2nd grade, and I seriously don't remember the words being this easy. I guess it must be because it's the 1st week of school and this is just review, but when you have to spell words like "can" and "bat" and "was", I just wanna laugh. Especially since she struggled with a few of them.
While we had been outside, Kelly's brother Scott had arrived with his wife Sherry, who was pregnant by about 5 or 6 months, so she and Kelly had a nice discussion while Meghan and I "studied".
By then, Meghan had to start getting ready for church with Grandma and Grandpa, while the rest of us got ready to go to a BBQ hosted by a friend of Kelly's.
We got to meet a bunch of people whom Kelly had been great friends with. I got to hang with an 11 and 12 year old, who happen to love Motocross, and that's actually pretty cool. They had cable and internet and even PlayStation, so my family must be the only ones truly starved since they live so far from town. Their new son, Andrew, who's 17 months, is just crazy, he runs all about saying the one word sentences, and he's just adorable. But God, he's a handful. We had a great time at that BBQ, and I even got to see them ride their motorbikes around the yard and watch some competitions on footage. They really like that stuff, but I think I'll stick with playing ATV OffRoad Fury.
Also, mosquitoes are so damn annoying. Be glad it's too dry for them guys, they're everywhere and they itch like mad! Steven and Taylor, the guys who I hung out with, even were recovering from Poison Ivy. Oh, but I did find an acorn on the ground, so I'm bringing that back to show off, cause we damn sure don't have those. Grandma said though because the acorn was so small it means they're going to have a bad winter, so I almost regretted finding it. But no, I guess I don't. rolleyes
When we got home we watched the original Batman, with Jack Nicholson as The Joker, and now I see why everyone says the 1st is the best, I wish I had seen this one before all the others.
We headed off to bed, and I had a nice long discussion with Meghan about growing up and getting older. It was nice talking to her, and that's gotta be the best I've felt about her in a while, she can be annoying, but she's alright.
In small doses.
