For some time, there was only silence. Skull-King might have thought, for a split second, that his entire journey, all of the trials, was all for naught.
Any feelings like that would soon be swept away, however. The woman's eyes shot open and an airy, feminine whisper echoed around the altar and to the ears of the Skull-King. The words that Rodric heard were not spoken from the woman's mouth, no, they might have been telepathic, or from some other source. It was just impossible to tell.
"Do not presume Illixtyl your personal granter of wishes, mortal. We see through to your greedy core. If we were interested in dealing with you, we would have made it known.
Though we do not appreciate your brashness, you've given us no reason to drag your soul to Nuzalheim.
Also, your offers.."
In an instant, the contents of jars dissipated with shrieks of agony. They had been taken, without permission.
"The devil holds no interest, not to I nor the Lady. You will take it with you when you go. Your request, for the item..
Is denied. You do not ask of Illixtyl, she gives when she feels you deserve. She does not fail to reward her faithful, however."
At the feet of the Skull-King had appeared a crystal baton with an eye-opening ruby at the end of it. Its purpose wasn't clear, it looked like something a king would hold while sitting upon his throne.
"You will take this, and with it, know that the warmth and comfort of the Illixtyl herself is always at your back, during the harshest blizzard, the coldest night, the deepest winter. But as you carry it, know that a price .. a terrible price .. comes attached."
And with that morbid outro, the voice ceased and the woman closed her eyes. The baton innocently gleamed on the floor at the Skull-King's feet.
If he'd choose to take it up, he'd find, through trial-and-error, that the baton, when he holds it proper in one of his hands, renders him completely immune to effects of cold, and spells of ice.
