Ok. I realize now that the refrigerator in this town might not be as reliable as the ones in Las Vegas. Another harsh lesson learned too late.
When I got off the computer last night, I realized I was hungry, since it was about midnight here, and I hadn't eaten anything since about 1 o'clock that afternoon. So I decided to grab something to eat in the kitchen, and I found some deli meats. There was some salami that I thought we had had the day we came in, since Kelly said she had brought some stuff for us to eat when had arrived on the 25th. But this date that it had been made said the 20th. I was worried that like 9 days might make a difference, but it was the only good thing in there to eat that wouldn't take too much noise to prepare, and it was either that or go to sleep on an empty stomach. So I made 2 sandwiches and plopped down on the sofa, Meghan already dead asleep. They tasted fine, and I went to bed sleepy and somewhat happy, except thinking that I wasn't going to school.
I had a really bad nightmare, that looking back I blame on the food. In it, I was trying to watch over Meghan somewhere, and I don't even know where we were, but she ran off and when I chased after her, I saw her get hit by a car. When I ran to see her body, there was a flattened pigeon on the road, and then I woke up crying, not only because of that, but because I was having really bad stomach pains. I don't know how I got back to sleep, but it was bright when I got back up. I think it was around 9, so everyone else must have just started. I remembered thinking back a year ago, I was too excited to go to school, and didn't even go to sleep. Then after getting depressed from too much nostalgia, I got ready, because everyone here had either gone to work or school but us.
The plan for today was to go to Gillespie, a neighboring town of Staunton, to go pick up some stuff Kelly had left when she used to teach here in the high school. It was a shorter drive then I thought it would be, and we passed by a pond with a thick green layer of pond scum over it, like frosting on a cake. Oh, and for the record, yes there are frogs around here Sonja, so don't consider it. And snakes, Grandpa said he's lost a couple pigeons from a big black snake, but it couldn't get out of the coop, cause he had the pigeon still lodged inside him from swallowing it whole.
To be honest, this place didn't seem much different from Staunton, but the Middle School and High School were like 3 feet apart. School's been open for about a week here, so we just went up to the office and got acquainted, then the principal showed her to the rooms. We had to find the lady who knew where it was, so we waited about 20 minutes until the kids were supposed to have lunch. We had a nice conversation with the Geography/English teacher, and the lady came in, God I am having so much trouble remembering names, but I've been introduced to so many people it's a wonder Kelly remembers them all.
Anyway, we got the huge tub of everything she needed, and then we started to head back. The main thing I noticed which I mentioned before was that this place is White People City. There are no ethnics in these towns at all. I feel safe to say that my dad and I were the only natural dark skinned people in that school and/or town, and we were getting a luke warm welcome because of it. We got the once over from every passing kid in the school. You know how people look you down, checking you from your toes to the tip of your head? That's what about 50 people did to us. We didn't mind it, we actually whispered and laughed to each other about it.
We got back into Staunton, and headed for Main Street to pick up some groceries and things, because my dad needed some Advil for the pain, and I need some more Benadryl, because my allergies were starting to act up. We met with a Pharmacist there named Todd, who I'd talked to on the phone before. We got what we needed then headed to get something to eat at Hardee's.
I like that name, for one of 2 reasons:
1) It's just the Midwest name for a Carl's Jr. Believe me, there is nothing different between the 2 restaurants besides the name.
2) Hardee's is a funny name. I know it's immature, but can you imagine us saying that instead of Carl's Jr.? "Oh man, I gotta get some Hardee's, I want a $6 Burger."
Anyway, we ate our food, but Sophia was getting restless, so we tried to hurry to get the groceries. The plan was for them to go grab them real quick, while I watched Sophia, and it was supposed to be easy enough, because lately I've noticed (and I'm not bragging here, I'm serious) I've got some kind of charm with her. I can almost always make her smile when I look at her, and I mean she'll giggle and everything. It's so adorable, but it wasn't working too well in the parking lot, so I ended up pulling her out of her carseat, and walking around with her for like 15 minutes, while they took their sweet a** time. I was seriously mad about how long it took for them just to get some essentials. The people coming in and out were staring at me, but it was like half "Look at the cute baby..." half "Why are they standing out here like that?".
But I guess I got lucky or something, cause she calmed down, and she was having a pretty bad fit. I like having that kind of magic about me, it makes me feel good that she likes me. We headed home and set out the groceries, and by then Meghan and Grandma were getting home from school. My dad and Kelly were outside enjoying the peace, but I was in the guest room trying to entertain Sophia. She was supposed to be having a nap, but she kept spitting out her binky and crying, so I sprawled her on the bed, and made her laugh a bit.
Meghan rushed inside, and asked where I was. The room light had been off, so I looked at Sophia to shush, cause I didn't want Meghan to come in here and ruin our "sibling time". And it was the coolest thing, Sophia looked at me worried, and stopped making noise. I was so proud of her. Eventually she got a little sad, so I had to put her back in the crib, but by then my parents had gone back inside from it pouring out here.
I don't remember much after that, I know I took a nap and everything, then I had some Taco Salad, and now I'm here, typing all this. I think I killed about an hour, the clock says 8:42 right now, so I'm doing alright. Meghan's next to me in her little desk sharpening colored pencils.
I guess that's it for now, I'll try to write later, and I don't know when, but sometime this week, we're supposed to go see Kelly's dad and his girlfriend. I wanna go back to Las Vegas so bad!! *pushes his face against the computer screen*
