Albuterol: Asthma's Worst Enemy?
"Salbuterol Sulfate" also known as just "Albuterol" in the United States:
Is it really asthma's worst enemy?
Albuterol is but a bronchodilator used in times when Asthma symptoms occur just before an attack. It is a "rescue inhaler". But Albuterol itself is not a controller medication. Some examples of some controller medications are:
Prednisone, Prednisolone, Foradil, Pulmicort, Azmacort, Symbicort, and Advair. And in some cases, Spiriva. These medications are used to keep asthma symptoms at bay. They are NOT to be used as "rescuers".

Some people develop desensitizations to Albuterol causing the medication to cease to work and causing refractory asthma and death. There is a different kind of albuterol called (R)-Albuterol Tartrate or Levalbuterol Tartrate-this medication contains the "R-isomer" only. It is a "stronger form" of Albuterol.

Sometimes asthma can be hard to control which is why some people have to be on more medication than others.
My Mother was on: Prednisone and Albuterol.
Now she has to take: Pulmicort, Foradil, Prednisone, Spiriva, Albuterol, Levalbuterol, Nasonex, Astelin, and Ipratropium Bromide in order to control the asthma.
To some out there with asthma, always keep your rescue inhaler on you in case of emergency. If you have to use your inhaler more than twice a day go see your doctor. Don't let refractory asthma take its place
