-Mia Lynar-Aevalin, Internal Illness

I suppose, before this summer, I never really looked at school from the standpoint of a teacher. It really puts a different perspective on things. I've been working with Jinn this summer, see, at his university, basically as a paid Lab Aide. So, I've been a student, in the position of a teacher, for lack of a different way to phrase it. I'm a bit older than the kids there--a year or two or three at most, and yet, I'm not one of them. There's a distinct line--or at least, there was at the beginning of the year. And yet, I'm not the teacher, either. I go in staff-only doors, but I don't teach lessons, and I'm not generations ahead of everyone else. So there's a line, but... it's not the same as between teacher and student.

In any case, the point is, that it's really a different way to look at the classroom. And not just because you're sitting in the front looking at the kids, rather than sitting at a desk looking at the white board. And you know, I was almost surprised by how much you can see from up there.

Kids always think they're being ultimately sneaky when they are fiddling with their cell phones under the desk, or have just one headphone in, listening to music. But they're not. At any given point in the day I could have pointed out all five of the kids who were listening to music during the lecture. And no, if you're wondering, long hair doesn't hide it at all. But even so, now that you know that, you have to figure that either a teacher is incredibly dense (not so likely) or that he's sick and tired of telling you to put your ipod or cellphone away, or that he just doesn't care. So next time your teacher tells you to put it away, don't look so shocked; you're not really very sneaky.

There's more to that, too. I'm sure that every one of us, as students, has imagines our teachers talking about how ridiculously stupid we are. Naw. We did that about the other class. The kids we didn't work with except for in labs; not about the kids in Jinn's class. Sure, we write a shitty score on the paper and say "well, what'd you expect from so-and-so" but it doesn't feel so good to write a 0 in the gradebook instead of a quiz score. And trust me, I've done it. The only people we ever laughed at for being idiots were the other guy's students. But hey, 2 points out of 85? That's just sad. Yeah, we laughed--but we sure had no idea who these people were anyways.

Teachers also don't hate their students.

Seriously.

Students always say "man, that teacher hates me." And alright, maybe some teachers are idiots and do that, but for the most part? No. So you're failing their class, usually they aren't going to tell people you're a dumbass, the worst I heard Jinn say about a student was "spacey" oh, and "lazy" but he told that to the kid's face. And it's true. He wasn't a dumb kid, just lazy. Hell, he got an A. But anyways, the point is we don't write a crappy score on your paper and say "hah, idiot" we seriously regret having to put that number on your paper and in the books, and after class we discuss ways of helping you understand what we're trying to teach. We want you to turn your work in--and not just because it makes us look good.

I don't think, for the most part, kids appreciate their teachers to the fullest extent. They seem to think of them as some sort of evil dictator or slave-driver. When I tell people my dad's a teacher they're like "Well that sucks. My dad is awesome." As if mine wasn't. Excuse me? You don't think teachers are one of the most important people in our society? Would you prefer you never learned how to read? Oh you do, do you? Well then get the hell out of my journal--because
you can't ******** read! Yeah, that's right, re think that. If you'd like to be a dumbass your whole life, no, that's not okay with me. I hate dumbasses. You should go jump off a really tall building. Seriously. Don't reproduce. You're an idiot.

No, seriously though. I don't see how people can
not appreciate teachers. They are our livelihood. They're the only reason we can hold a job and support a family. Don't give me this "I taught myself" s**t. At some point in your life, someone taught you something. You would not function without your teachers. So seriously, appreciate them--they work hella hard for you.
