“Hey Edda.” Kruez stated as he came by her home early the next morning, before he went off to his tunnel. She turned from where she sat, running her fingers through some yarn. She liked to knit. She’d loved to read, but being blind stopped her from that as she found a new hobby. Knitting. “You’re here early” She said, smiling as she faced him. “I gots a question for you.” Kruez said, the smile on his face apparent through his voice. Edda raised an eyebrow at him. “What would you say…about leaving?” He grinned.
Edda was silent, she seemed a little taken aback at the question. “L-Leave?” She asked. “Where? Another pit?” She said, letting her yarn fall to her lap. “No, Edda. Not another one of these god-forsaken pits.” Kruez said, his voice a slight harshness to it at the thought of moving just to another pit. “I mean, the surface.” He smiled ear to ear. “Kruez…Do you understand…what your saying..” Edda asked, keeping her voice calm. “Course I do.” He chuckled. She seemed unsure, but nodded. “just checking.”
She was silent after that as Kruez waited.. “Well, what do you say?” He asked. “Kruez…” She started. “You tried this before…” Kruez paused, thinking back. “Well, I was young back then.” He shrugged. He had tried once before. He’d climbed the wall up to the surface hole, only to be shook down by an earthquake tremor and yelled at. “Plus, I don’t want to see you thrown in jail another night.” Edda said softly. “I can’t talk to you at night when your locked up.” Kruez snorted. “I just break out anyways.” She scowled.
“Your really serious about this?” Edda asked, after the silence from Kruez. Usually he’d have cracked under the pressure of the joke by now. He couldn’t hold a joke in if his life depended on it. “I am.” He nodded. “But I want you to come with me. We don’t need this pit. We’ll go to the surface, and live there, by our rules. No more lights out to save electricity. No more worries about the tremors. Up there, there ain’t no ceiling.” He said, determination in his voice. Edda was silent.
“Alright…” She finally muttered, her hands returning to the knitting in her lap. He raised an eyebrow. “I’ll go with you.” She said, looking up at him, a nervous smile crossing her face. Kruez cheered quietly, jumping up as he grabbed Edda, spinning her around the small room like he did often. “Hey, hey! My knitting” She laughed, holding his arms tightly as he set her back on the solid ground.
Kruez was all smiles. “I gotta go to ‘work.’ He said. “I’ll be back tonight. And we’ll get ready.” He smiled as he kissed Edda yet again, and left the room. She felt him leave, waiting for the air to settle. “I can’t believe I am going for another one of his crazy schemes..” She sighed, sitting back down.

Kruez returned that evening, not as late as he usually had been as he poked his head into her room. “Tonight’s the nighttttt~” He sang, horribly. Edda chuckled. Even if he was always off key, she loved it. “Alright, Alright. I get it. What’s your genius plan?” She asked. “Pack everything you want.” He smiled. “We leave at dawn.”
