Let's start off with the TURN BACK THE PENDULUM short story. The story starts back 110 years before the start of the Bleach series.
A question that everyone would like to know is why did Kaname join Aizen? Unfortunately, even after the pendulum series we still don't have those answers. If you look at all the information we have on the story you can make some excellent assumptions. My theory is Aizen's Zanpaktou shikai state only works on individuals who can see it. Kaname being blind is obviously immune to these effects. Aizen being the manipulative person that he is probably is just using Kaname for some other purpose.
All so during the pendulum series Kaname did something that was way out of his norm. When Kaname was about to attack Kisuke and Tessai without being ordered to do so Aizen repeated himself twice that "it was alright". For the first time Kaname seemed frightened and immediately bowed to the ground for forgiveness. To see Kaname in such a frightening state indicates to me that Aizen has "SOMETHING" that makes Kaname forever loyal to him.
Let's head even further into the present. What was the point of Kaname V.S. Kenpachi? I mean besides the point Tite Kubo showing off Kaname's bankai and other skills. I really don't see any point for him going against kenpachi besides for just a distraction for Aizen's big betrayal plan.
I hope we get some answers soon since Aizen is getting closer to reaching his plans. I n the mean time I'll just have to keep reading to find out.

I have a theory :Aizen and Tousen all grew up in the same district. During this time Tousen was heckled and beat because of his blindness. One day Tousen was severely beaten by some street thugs and Aizen who beginning to become a shinigami stopped them and then helped Tousen. So skipping forward. Aizen left to go to the Seireitei and Tousen was thankful, but then he got angry , and started to try and pick fights with everyone. Then he met that unnamed woman that set him straight. In episode 62 when Komamura asks Tousen why he become Tousen never finishes his statement , or rather we don't hear him. We automatically think it was because of the woman because she had been revealed in an earlier episode. When in fact it was because of Aizen. When Aizen tells Tousen of his plans , Tousen automatically rejects. Aizen being a smart man reminds Tousen of what happened when they were younger. He also uses Tousen's morals against him using his beating as an example of all the violence and injustice in the Soul society , even in the Seireitei. Tousen is shocked he had never realized this before and during an epiphany he realizes it was because of violence and injustice that the woman was killed. He unsheathes Suzumushi and a tear falls on it's blade. Aizen smiles putting on hand on Tousen's shoulder and says" Its alright Kaname , we will deal justice" and Tousen obliges to come with Aizen , truly believing that it is the right path.
But that's just my theory
