METHOD
Respondents
The respondents were seventeen female and ten male students, ranging in age from 17 to 25 (mean age=18.71), at Dawson College in Montreal.
Instrument
The data for this student was gathered by a survey. The survey form was composed by five student researchers and contained questions from various social attitudes and behaviors. In the introduction section respondents were told that the research was being done as an in class project and it would take no more than 5 minutes to complete. The respondents were told that the survey was completely voluntary and their answers would remain anonymous (which means they were not to say their names on the survey form). The two questions that were relevant to this study were: [1] How happy are you from a scale of 1 to 10? [2] On average how many hours a week do you spend talking with your friends?
Procedure
On September 25, 2008 the survey form distributed to the students of a Research Methods at Dawson College in Montreal. The return rate was 96%.
Analysis
To make a comparison between the number of hours spent with friends and their level of happiness, an average score was calculated of happiness and the number of hours spent with friends.
