That whole friends > pixels argument
Friends > pixels

Yes, duh, obviously. But I don't like it when people try to preach this slogan.

1) People already have friends IRL when they join Gaia. Is it wrong to use Gaia solely to play with the pixels? As long as they remain loyal to their existing friends, there's no need to condemn them.

2) Some people use this argument to guilt trip others into donating to them. rolleyes Now WHO'S the one that's really greedy for pixels here?

3) Often, these so-called friends are actually casual online playmates. You like them because you happen to have the same interests, even if you don't know much about their personalities, dreams, fears, regrets, faults...

There is nothing wrong with having such acquaintances. Not every relationship has to be a deep, unwavering friendship. But I don't like shallow relationships being glorified as friendships. I don't like the friends > pixels slogan being used to glorify them.

I might post this as a new topic in GCD, but some of the really snooty posts there make me hesitate. ^^;

    Haven't heard/seen/read/written/said it.

    If you don't know these people -that- well, are they really friends whose worth is greater than that of pixels? first, you have the effort you put into the pixels, which, to begin with, is a greater or lesser amount depending on how much you care about said pixels.

    and then you have these "friends": people whom you really don't know, people who honestly haven't invested time or money in you... who thereby prove how much they care about a relationship with -you-. are they really "friends"?

    imho, as long as they spend equal or greater time and effort on a meaningful relationship with you, working to make that relationship fit the definition of "friendship", i wouldn't mind their asking me for donations.

    but the motto "friends > pixels" is not an absolutely true statement, and no one has the right to force its subjectivity down someone else's throat. if you care more about pixels than people, so what? no one has the credentials to judge you for it. you certainly aren't heartless if you deny a near-total stranger your money and time when they have no intention of paying you back by -any- means.

    D< anyway. i'm just blowing off steam. hypocrites like that usually wake up the worst in me.

    I would support the posting of it as well.

    EDIT: Woah, really late feedback on this post. Well if you still haven't, I backup what I previously stated. ^^;
