Job Shadowing Reflection Essay

Ever since I was a kid, I have always dreamed. I dreamed of living in an alternate reality, made from video games that I played. Chasing after people that I wanted to know better, I taught myself how to draw so that I could draw out what I felt for them. Dreaming has only brought me natural artistic skills. I continue to dream and I would like to pick a career that allows me to make my dreams come into effect. I’ve never really liked art, but the best art for me is comic art. I love art because of the actions in the pages, characters that interact with each other, regardless of what affects them. The world of comics can be bent into whatever shape and form the artist so chooses. I grew up reading comics, and watching them on TV, the personality and theme of each story influenced me. I learned from books how to make my own comics. When I get out of college (which ever one I’m going to) I’m going to try out the comic producing industry.
Really I had no idea where I was going. Me mom told me that she already had a working job site for me. At first I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal. Just go in, learn, and jot down what I needed. My teacher gave me a list of questions to ask my mentor. When the day came I brought what I needed, a notebook and my camera.
My mentor was Ben Jones, he was an assistant professor. He works at the DBCC in Daytona. The college area was for computer science. It offers students a four year degree.
I sat and watched Ben teach a logo design class, they were making logos and learning how to actually make a logo work when using it effectively. The students had sketchbooks with drawings of logo ideas in it. After the class was over Ben took me over to a photo shopping class and answered my questions.
After going to the college, I’m glad that I’m never going there again. I sat threw a four hour class, watching students make art that they didn’t enjoy. They weren’t having any fun with it at all. The class’s whole concept about logo design was that art can only be acknowledged by science. I believe that art is more than science. Its what a person believes in, regardless if they have to sleep on the floor every night. I was sitting in that class thinking “what am I doing here!? Why are these people wasting valuable time trying to accomplish art through total science, why is me mom trying to get me in such a crappy college degree?” I have been influenced by October the 15th to stay away from computer science. I would much rather make comic books and find another job to support myself. The other job might be teaching, or being a fireman.
