I sighed as I walked through the front door. I was finally finshed with the school day. In first period, Algebra 2 Honors, we'd done a review of the chapter; I almost fell asleep. Next was Air Force Junior ROTC 2; I did fall asleep. Web Design 1; I finished my work and surfed the web. Biology Honors; we did an expirement that intrested me enough to keep me awake. I worked alone, of course. An average schoolday followed by an average bus ride home. I stepped out of the doorway.
Topaz, my 7-month-old tortiseshell cat, walked out from behind the sofa to greet me. As she walked closer, her older brother, Amber, jumped on top of her, orange pelt flashing. Amber was large and muscley, but Topaz was lithe and smart. She twisted to the side and slashed out at Ambers nose. Amber jumped back, but Topaz jumped onto his back. Amber reared up onto his hind legs, trying to shake Topaz off. It worked.
Topaz fell on her back. With a woosh, she lost her breath. Amber jumped on top of her, mock biting at her throat. Topaz battered away at his stomach, stopping him and forcing him to retreat. He ran away, Topaz chasing after him. I smiled. Topaz was so smart. Like pet, like owner! Well, I wish.
I turned and headed for the stairs. The sounds of Topaz and Amber's continued scuffle floated out of the room next to me. I walked down the hall to my room. I paused at the doorway. Funny, my door was open. I always close it in the morning, because the cats just LOVE my room, and worse, my closet. So, why was it open? Had I forgotten to close it this morning? I grimanced and walked in the door.
I jumped back with a shout of suprise. Someone was in there, sitting on my bed!
