Rants and Ravings of an insomniac
the very random thoughts of an insomniac
I finally found the time to play a new RPG and I'm glad I chose Square Enix's latest game, Radiata Stories, to waste my time with. Though the storyline isn't very deep, the characters are interesting and charming enough to keep me going. At first I thought Jack Russell, the main protagonist and not the dog, was such a dweeb -- well, he was, but in a funny and amusing kinda way. His cockiness and ego make him look stupid sometimes, but I found it quite hilarious. What would've annoyed me would be if he were the goody-two-shoes type which I've come to loathe.

Then there's Ridley. Her snappy remarks just make the whole Jack-is-a-dweeb thing look even funnier. As the second main protragonist, she's one heck of a fighter with a short temper and an attitude that could stand up against Jack's cockiness. Haha, I love the pair. She grows out of it eventually and we see Jack trying to bring the old Ridley back.

The game boasts 117 playable characters with 150 characters in total -- more than the Suikoden series. But, being a suikoden fan, I'm not really impressed with their character line up. Sure they are playable -- but really, will you play all the people you recruit?! It's frickin' annoying to level up new characters everytime you get them and not use them anyway later on. At least in the suikoden series, except for the 4th one, all the characters have uses whether they be playable in field battles, strategy battles, or just plain support like selling supplies, growing plants, etc.

Ofcourse, recruiting friends will also require you to be their stooge every now and then, asking you to find this, or get that, or do this and that... err, sorry, I'm not everyone's servant. And, I don't need to get everyone. It's not really a necessity.

In the middle of the game, you get to choose whether to fight on the humans' side or the nonhumans' side. I should've stuck with the humans -- the nonhumans (elves, goblins, dwarves and orcs) are boring as hell. They all look alike, especially the goblins. Meanwhile, the light elves have a long stick stuck up their asses.

Oh well, I'll give the game a second go. I'll be looking for the secret character, Lenneth from Valkyrie Profile, YAY! 3nodding
