When Eric was seventeen he was kidnapped and taken to a place where crazy scientists experimented on people. The scientists had already tested to see if they could genetically alter people so they we're part animal on babies, now they wanted to see if they could do it to grown people. They cut off his ears and placed wolf ears on the top of his head, and added an extension to his spine making a tail. He survived and escaped, but just barely. After escaping he went on a quest to find any other escapees, since he was sure that his parents would overreact and/or shun him for being part wolf now, and found Max. She helped him to try to live a somewhat normal life. He loves her, she just doesn't know it yet.

Shadow is a creature created purely from hate and anger. He was given birth after Eric was transmutated to have wolf ears and a tail, and is probably the only reason how Eric got out of there alive. He only shows up when Eric gets angry, and attempts to kill/destroy everything in sight. How Shadow got the super human strength powers is a mystery, along with his powers which he doesn't share with Eric. The only person Shadow refuses to kill is Max, partially because Eric loves her, and also because no matter how many times he tries to hit her he can't do it. He doesn't want to admit it, but he also loves and cares for Max very much. The only way for him to stop his attacking frenzy is to calm him down enough for Eric to take over, but sometimes he calms himself down to a point where he can act and think coherently and Eric doesn't need to take over.
