Shifts lab is in a different plane of existence just like hell, the soul society, and the world of the living. The only difference is that instead of having three dimensions of space and one dimension of time, it has two dimensions of space and two dimensions of time. This means that the traditional laws of physics need to be adapted. The inverse square law of light (if you move 2 times farther away from a light source, it appears 1/4 or 1/2^2 time less bright) would need to be modified to the inverse law. The second dimension of time is controllable and allows any phenomenon that are so strange, that if a human were to experience any of them, they would probably go insane (think dejà vu only much much worse, or your bones breaking before you fall off a building because you accidentally moved to a time before it was built). If your mind was insanity-proof (not mine as you can see) and your way of thinking was flexible enough to understand what was happening around you, you would still die because your lungs would not have enough surface area to be able to absorb enough oxygen to be able to survive. (So far, if you are from this universe, you die of insanity. If are alive, you die because you can't get enough air to breath properly. I don't know anyone that does not fit into both of these catagories). Besides the insane and the dead part, the lab would be a very interesting and fun place to be. If you were late for a meeting with your other insane, dead humans, simply stop one dimension of time then travel there using the second. If the meeting time was set in the other dimension of time (the one you cannot control) simply go back to when the meeting time was decided and tell the other dead humans that if they don't use the other dimension of time, you will be late.
You may wonder how you could walk, stand, lie on the ground dead, or do anything else where you are above something else. After all, there is only forward and backwards and left and right in the lab. However, things can exist on top each other because neither you nor the object you will be on have any height. If you were to take an object from this world (like your hand) then put another object above or below it (or both like a glove) and another object below that (like a desk), then squish them until they were infinitely flat, you would still have the layers glove, hand, glove, desk in that order but they would have no height. This allows objects to be stacked on top of each other even though they are at the same height (in this case, 0). The useful thing about this is that if an object created in the lab were moved to a place with three dimensions, the object would automatically get the height that the it would have if it had been made in the three dimensional world.
Because time travels at a different speed in the lab, if there a doorway into it, in order for the front of you coming out not to hit the back of you going in, you would possibly need to spend millions of years there.
