The Case of the Top Hat murderer Ch. 3
Chapter 3

I continued to walk down the road with Matt closely following my footsteps, we had been walking for almost an hour and the buildings seemed to look more older as we got closer to where the first murder had taken place. My feet were starting to hurt from walking, but I continued walking, it didn't seem to bother Matt, he had to keep jogging to keep up with me. We were about 5 minutes away from the crime scene when we walked to the side of road, there were few carriges being pulled by horses going by every now and again so we had to be careful walking over the road. We stood at the end of the road, while i was at the end of the path I glanced around to see if the roads were clear, I saw a woman walking across the road, she got a little bit over the road and I noticed that she had stopped in the middle of the road. I saw a horse riding towards her, I looked at her and she was struggling to move, I noticed that the back of her shoe was caught in the small gap between the cobbled road. I tried to run towards her, but my legs wouldn't move, it was like my feet were glued to the ground and something wanted me to see this young woman get knocked over by a horse and carriage, I stared at the woman knowing I couldn't do anything to stop what was about to happen. All of a sudden everything started going slower, like in slow motion, I saw the horse galloping towards the young woman. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Matt start running out into the road, I turned my head to look at him, I could see that he wasn't concerned for his own safety, he was just focusing on saving the young woman in the middle of the road. After I noticed Matt running towards the woman, everything started going back to the normal speed, I blinked and what seemed like a second I opened them again, it must have been longer than I thought, because the horse had just went by me. I turned my head and looked at where the woman had been stuck, there was nothing there, I felt cool air blow against the side of my face as the hors went past me. I looked at the road and saw Matt lying on the ground holding the side of his stomach, the young woman was lying on the ground she didn't look hurt, I tried to move and this time my legs actually did move, I walked over to Matt and the young woman. I held out my hand and helped the young woman to her feet, she was shaking, but that was understandable, because of what had just happened. I then helped Matt to hist feet, he was breathing quite heavily and he looked like he was in a little bit of pain.

"Miss, are you ok?" I asked politely
"I think I am" she said while staring at the floor, she was still in shock
"How about you Matt, are you ok?"
"I'm fine, its just a scratch" he said while still holding his side, the girl looked up from the floor and looked at Matt
"You saved my life didn't you" she said slowly wiped a tear from her eyes
"I just did what anyone would have done" he said still clutching his side, the girl moved closer towards Matt and kissed him softly on his cheek
"Thank you for protecting me" she said moving back slowly, I stood there and turned away from both of them, I stopped myself from laughing as I saw Matt's cheeks start to turn red
"Well at least you are ok now" he said looking at the floor, to me it seemed that they were acting like a couple of school children that had fallen in love
"Thanks to you i'm fine, may I ask your name" she said smiling at Matt holding out her hand
"You may call me Matt, what may I call you" he asked lifting her hand and he gently kissed her hand, she started to blush
"Umm, you may call me Lucy" she said quite quietly, I started to tap my foot on the floor impatiently, like a parent waiting for their child to follow them, but the child has their eyes fixed on a slide at the local park
"I'm sorry miss, but i'm in a hurry, so I shall have to take my leave" just before he left, he wrote something down on his notepad and ripped the page out, he handed it to Lucy.
"Whats this?" she asked puzzled
"Its my address, I would like to take you out for a meal, if that is ok with you" he asked her, I started to tap my foot a bit louder
"It would be my pleasure, when should I call at your house" she asked, she was still blushing
"Just call tomorrow evening, i'm not too sure when I will be free, but i'm in a hurry at the moment, so I will have to leave now" he gave her one last smile and turned away and walked towards where I was standing
"Goodbye Matt" she shouted and she turned around and crossed over the road where she had nearly been knocked over 5 minutes ago
"Shall we continue towards where the murder took place?" I asked Matt, he still had the smile on his face, I could see he was happy and why shouldn't he, he had just saved a young woman from being seriously injured or worse even killed, I didn't like thinking about these things, but it was part of my job I guess
"Yes I think it would be best if we did" he said I he started walking forward. I noticed that there was a hole in his trousers, just below his knee from when he hit the ground.

We had continued to walk for another 10 minutes, we reached the first murder scene, it was an alleyway, but it was connected by lots of other alleyways, not many people walked this way so a lot of the alleyways were blocked off. We started walking through the long winding alleyways, we went around a few corners and walked out into a small square linking the alleyways. I looked around and I noticed a pool of dry blood on the floor, it must have been there for the past couple of days, most likely from the victim, there was hand prints on the wall also possibly off the victim. I was wondering why there would be blood on the wall, then I guessed the victim had felt their wound and got blood on their hand, then they staggered to the wall to keep themselves standing, thats how the blood must have got on the wall. I noticed a rock lying in the left hand corner, I walked over to it and moved it gently to the side I saw something that caught my eye, it was a ring, I picked it up and turned to face Matt.

"Do you think its from the victim?" I asked Matt while handing the ring to him
"By the size of it I would say it would have belonged to a a woman, she would be quite small, late 30s and married, since the ring looks like a wedding ring" he said while studying the ring
"Well you got a lot of that right, the victim was a woman, she was quite small, but she was in her 40s and she had been divorced, if this was a mugging I'm sure the ring would have been taken with the killer" I said while skimming through my notebook, that contained details about the victim
"So found anything else" Matt asked, still scanning the area with his eyes
"I noticed that there was blood on the walls, so the victim may have tried to escape, but her wound was to great and she didn't get far enough to find help" I said to Matt while looking at the wall where the blood was
"So there are no other clues here" Matt said looking around at the floor
"It doesn't look like it" I said with a worried expression on my face, the air grew colder and the sky turned dark, I had a feeling something bad was going to happen, I started to shiver when I heard the sound that was like a bottle smashing on the floor
"What was that noise" Matt seemed to shout at me, but by the time the words left his mouth, I was already running towards where the sound had came from.

I was running quite fast and I was starting to lose my breath, I must have been running for about 2 minutes, it was easy to get lost in the alleyways. I got the the end of one of the paths and turned right, I saw a figure standing at the bottom of the alleyway, he was wearing what looked to be a black robe, he didn't have a hood on, but instead was wearing a top hat. I looked at his hand and noticed there was something shiny in his hand, it seemed to look like a knife, he saw that I was looking at him and he turned and ran off in the opposite direction. Matt was trying to keep up with me, but he seemed to get lost since a lot of the walls looked the same, I couldn't get a good luck at the figure since it was dark and he was dressed all in black, I continued the pursuit on the unknown person. I followed him around four more corners and I lost sight of him, I still continued to go in the direction he had gone, I ended up at a dead end. I heard footsteps behind me, I didn't have time to turn around, I was waiting to feel the cold hard steel of the blade to pierce my back, I didn't have to wait too long, I felt the blade against my back, I heard Matt shouting in the distance and everything went black, into eternal darkness.
