land of the Undead
Hello, my name is Miyako. This is the story of my friend Riku and I, and our adventures in the land of the undead.
Raven Eyes

I looked over to see the dark eyes of the man who was sitting next to me. His eyes were familiar, I knew I had seen them before. They reminded me of the raven's eyes, looking straight into my soul. He looked a little like Riku, well, the skin was light, and he had beautiful features.

When he met my gaze, he turned to me politely and said, "Hello, my name is Takeshi. I'm the owner's son." he said in a surprisingly inviting voice.

"Hello Takeshi. I'm Miyako. Nice to meet you." I shook the friendly hand that had been offered to me.

"Yeah, I know who you are." he said without changing his expression.

"Umm . . . Could you excuse me for a second?" I said as calmly as I could make my voice. I didn't know if it would sound like I was scared, which I was, but I didn't want Takeshi to know. I got up from my seat and made my way, as quickly as I could in the crowded club, toward the bathroom.

I felt a heavy hand on my arm as I fled. My heart started racing in fear. It made me turn; I was forced to face the one who had put his hand on me. The deep eyes, that could look into souls, looked into me again.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sound like a stalker. My father had just mentioned that you had come in with Riku."

"Oh, don't be sorry. It was my fault, I overreacted." The blood was rushing to my face. If not for all of the make-up, my face would have been as red as an apple.

I looked over the crowd to see if I could spot Riku. I saw his dark, black hair, then, he turned and looked in my direction. His eyes grew to the size of saucers. Something was wrong, I could tell, but I didn't know what.

I turned to look back at Takeshi and he was gone. Empty space filled the area where he had stood. I looked back to where Riku had been, but he had disappeared too. Takeshi and Riku were both nowhere to be seen.

Then, I felt a new hand on my shoulder. My heart raced again. But, when I turned, it slowed back to normal. It was Riku, looking scared and anxious. I gave him a puzzled look. I wanted to know why he was scared, or what he was scared of.

He must have read my expression. "I'll explain later. First we need to get out of here." He said it with authority as he seized my hand and led me, faster than should be possible, through the crowd and out the front door. I just followed, scared by his expression.

We walked through the dark alley and out onto the open sidewalk. He turned to me, without letting go of my wrist, and ask an odd question.

"Who were you talking to in there?"

"Umm . . . It was just Takeshi, he is Takehito's son." His expression was questioning when I had said Takeshi's name.

"Are you sure that was his name?"

"Yeah, that's what he said it was. Why? Is that not his name?"

"Well . . ." he looked around anxiously, his gaze stopping at the entrance of the alley leading to the club. "Follow me I need to talk to you . . .alone"

"Okay? Sure." I let Riku lead me out of the town. We walked back the way we had came. Instead of going back to his house, we headed for the lake.

He dragged me under the oak tree and made me sit on the cool grass. "You weren't talking to Takehito's son." Riku said before I could ask him why he had dragged me from the club.

"What? Then who was I talking to?"

Silence swept over us. He was the one to break the stillness. "That was, let's just say, an old enemy of mine. I haven't seen him for so many years, and now he just shows up out of nowhere. I should have known it was him the first time." he was rambling on to himself. Not talking to me anymore, but more, talking to himself.

"Why is he your enemy? He seemed really nice, or at least, he was nice to me."

"His name is Hikaru. He was the man who was suppose to marry Ai. When we canceled the ceremony, he got mad. He really was in love with Ai. She thought he was a creep, though, and she said she would never marry him. When he heard that, he vowed he would get revenge on Ai and our family. He said he would hunt for us until Ai was his bride." Riku finished in a low voice.

"Well, I think he finally found you." I said in a whisper. I turned away from Riku and looked at the horizon, watching the early morning sunrise.

"Yeah." he said distractedly. He looked at the sunrise too. He seemed to come back to reality as he said, "We should be getting home. You need to get some sleep."

We got up and started walking down the street toward our houses. Riku was acting anxious the whole way. Looking around every so often. I was trying not to stare, but I just couldn't help myself. Then, I noticed the bright sun just behind Riku. It made me think of something to ask Riku.

"If you're a vampire, then why does the sun have no effect on you?" I asked suddenly, with only pure curiosity in my voice.

He turned and smiled at me. "Well, if you must know," he said sarcastically, "it's because of this ring I wear." He held up his right hand to show the beautiful moonstone ring that had been placed on his middle finger. It shimmered in the light of the early morning sun.

"So, how does a moonstone ring protect you?" I had grabbed his hand to examine the ring more closely.

"I don't really know, Miyako. All I know is that if an older vampire, who has stopped aging, was to take off their ring then they would burn. Killed by the sun." He shrugged, "But, for someone like me, I don't know." He pulled his hand from my view and put it in his pocket.

"Oh." I was hoping for some long explanation. For more of his secrets to be revealed. I guess that the secrets would just have to wait.
