What Is Manga?

In Japan manga are comics and print cartoons, sometimes called komikko, in the Japanese language, and conforming to the style developed in Japan in the late 20th century. In there modern form, manga date shortly after World War II, but they actually have a long, complex pre-history in earlier Japanese art.
There are many types and genres of manga. The types range from toddlers to grown adults. The actual names are shonen, directed towards young and teen boys, such as “Naruto“, which is about a twelve-year-old boy who has a horrible secret: there is a very powerful, very dangerous, and very evil demon sealed inside of him. Will he accomplish his dream of becoming the best ninja in his village? Or will the sealed power destroy him first?
Another type is seinen. Seinen is a style of manga that is directed towards older teens and grown men. Such as the manga “Addicted to Curry“. Seinen manga are more serious than regular shonen, but they still have funny sides. Such as my example. “Addicted to Curry” is about a young curry chef with a mysterious past who is helping his friend to keep her fathers curry shop opened through a lack of customers, a hostile takeover attempt by a huge company, and many more challenges.
For young and teen girls there is shoujo style manga. Shoujo manga is mostly based on romance, school drama, and growing up. But there are also a few where the main girl character is mistaken for a boy I.e. “Ouran High School Host Club”. “Ouran High School Host Club” is about a girl who is mistakenly joined into the schools very popular Host Club. It isn’t until a cruel customer gives into her jealousy do the other members (except one) have there suspicions proven correct.
For older teens and adult women there is josei. Much like shoujo, josei is a manga for girls, the main genres are romance, but they have a more mature side to them since in most shoujo the romances take place in middle school or high school. One example of josei is “Its Not Like That, Darling”. This manga is a about a young college student who was held back a year do to an accident that left her in the hospital for half a year. She then meets a novelist, who she has been dreaming about since she got out of the hospital. Now that she has finally met him very strange things have been happening to her.
For toddlers there is kodomo manga. One of the most popular kodomo manga is Hamtaro. The main storyline is about Hamtaro, who is a hamster, and is friends, who are also hamsters. The plot is usually repetitive as Hamtaro and his friends embark on dangerous adventures, usually running into trouble and making new friends.
The last main style is dojinshi. Dojinshi are produced by small amateur publishers outside of the mainstream commercial market. It is also fan based comics with made up characters or characters from popular manga that follow the storyline or are made up entirely. In some report-like dojinshi people add themselves or there friends into the mix.
