Friday, the Iowa Supreme Court struck down a state law prohibited same-sex marriage. The state will begin issuing marriage licenses to gay couples later this month. The state legislature does not expect to touch the issue this term, though a few vocal Republicans have gone on record as violently opposing same-sex unions in Iowa and vow to introduce a constitutional amendment ASAP. But Democratic leaders say it won't happen this year, and possibly never. To amend the state constitution, it would have to be approved by both houses of the state legislature two years in a row, then be put on a general election ballot to be approved by the electorate.

So if you ever wanted to get married in the state of Iowa (and I know I never have), now's the time to make the pilgrimage to the Corn Belt, as Iowa joins Connecticut and Massachusetts as the only states to allow gay marriage.
