RIP J. G Ballard. I grew up with New wave writing. It rather irritates me that the obits seem to brush off his new wave writing while discussing his mainstream stuff at length. I think Empire of the Sun is important, it's just I think his prose style evoolved in some fascinating ways over a life as a writer and the press disdain for his more difficult work is getting brushed under the carpet because of the genre ghetto. I should go re read his stuff; it's been a while.
