Dear Diana-san,
Hi! My name’s Kazuki Hihara! But you probably already knew that. Well, this is my first time doing this kind of thing. I guess I should start off with myself! I’m in ninth grade so that makes me fourteen. My birthday is December 12 and I’m on my school track team. I love to eat sweets! Especially buns. Oh! I have an older brother, his name’s Haruki…..Well, that’s basically all about me!
Anyway, I hope we can become friends! I’d love to know about you too! Can’t wait to receive your letter!
From,
Kazuki Hihara

It had all started three years ago. With just a simple envelope and letter.
It was a project we had to do in Japanese school for the whole year. Of course, being the student, I had groaned and dreaded the project. Not only was it homework from Japanese school, but I had school homework to finish. I mean, it would be such a drag. Who would want to write to some person all the way in Japan anyway?
---
Diana read the newest email she received with a grin and giggled at random parts.

Hey Ana-chan,
I’m glad to hear you like your new school! It must be sorta hard starting at a new school, especially in grade 11. HAHAHA! Wow! That really happened in your class? That’s totally funny! I can’t believe that! The Daily Life of Diana really is funny ☺
GUESS WHHHHHHAAAAAT!!!!!! I MADE IT INTO THE CONCOURS! You know the music concours? I’m so excited!! It looks like a lot of fun but also a lot of work. The best part is Azuma Yunoki is in it with me! I mentioned him right? There’s also a guy in grade 11 named Len Tsukimori and two tenth graders named Keiichi Shimizu and Shoko Fuuyumi. OH! And this other girl from the Gen Ed. I think her name was Kahoko Hino. Who knew a Gen Ed student would be in the concours, huh? But I’m SOOO excited! It’ll be so much fun! But I’ve gotta practice real hard.

She was glad he made the concours like he wanted. She clicked the ‘reply’ button on the screen and immediately started typing up her email to him. It was always like this. After her project ended, she still continued to keep in touch with Kazuki, but by email. It was weird but they had just…clicked. At first it was awkward on her part, but she started warming up. She learned more about him and by that time they had become close. Well as close as penpals can get, that is.

“Done.” She hit send and closed the window. Now all she had to do was wait for his next email. Then there was a soft knocking on her door as her mother popped her head in.

“Diana, your father just brought the tickets in.” Her mother held up three tickets and Diana squealed excitedly. The whole house shook from the sudden squeal. “Haha, well I’ll be downstairs.” Her mother scurried off before more squeals could erupt and damage her ear drums.

Diana jumped onto her bed and hugged her pillow. YES! She was going FINALLY! Her whole family had planned this trip for months! But that wasn’t what excited her most. She would finally get to see him!

“Finally.” She whispered blissfully and turned over on her side. “Japan, here I come!”

But her excitement slowly began to shatter as the days went on. On the first few days, she had managed to pack all her luggage even if the trip was in a week. Of course she checked her emails and sent her own. That’s exactly what made her so...not excited.

Lately, all the emails she received from him where all based on one subject; Kahoko Hino. Sure at first Diana was glad he made new friends but now it was all ‘Kahoko this’ or ‘Kahoko that’. Today’s was no different.

Why did it hurt so much? Why did her heart clench whenever her eyes swept over that name, Kahoko Hino? He lived in Japan and she lived in Malaysia. They were millions of miles away from each other, yet she still felt a strange pang whenever the name popped out.

Nevertheless, she continued on with her cheerfulness and wrote her reply. At the end, however, she contemplated on whether or not to tell that she was going to Japan in a few days. Would he care?

“Probably not.” She muttered sadly to herself, clicking the send button as a piece of her shattering heart followed it.

The next few days were uneventful. She had decided not to read any of his emails. She felt stupid for being stubborn and being mean. He was probably worried sick…maybe not really but who knows? She had managed to research on the computer about his school and wrote down everything. Even if she was upset, she would take the chance and find him. She’d search every corner of Japan even if she had to. It was her only chance to find him.

Thank you for flying with Air Japan. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Diana stretched and yawned widely, rubbing her black eyes. Finally, it was Japan. She followed her family out of the plane and into the place where the luggage would be.

“Come on! Hurry hurry!” Diana jumped around like a child making her parents laugh at her sudden behavior.

“Someone’s excited.” Her dad ruffled her black hair and pulled their luggage onto the ground.

“Of course! It’s my first time.” Diana grinned widely. And I want to find someone. But she didn’t say that out loud. She gripped her backpack strap and smiled widely, following her parents out of the terminal and being greeted by her aunt and uncle.

Her first week in Japan was a blast! She got to know her cousins a bit more and they were absolutely amazing. Her family was staying at her aunt and uncle’s house. They had visited almost everywhere! Okay, maybe she was exaggerating a little, but everything was wonderful. Everything was so new to her compared to Malaysia. Tons of people walked among the streets and the signs were really bright. She was having so much fun that she forgot all about her emails. That was until she decided to email one of her best friends in America how she was doing, did she see her inbox. And it took her by complete shock.

78 new messages

She clicked her inbox and she gapped at it. All 78 messages were from Kazuki Hihara. ALL 78.

“Wow, I didn’t know he missed me this much.” She pressed on of the recent ones and read it.

ANA-CHAAAAAAAAN!!! Where are you? Why haven’t you messaged me back? I hope I didn’t say anything to make you angry! Please, I’m sorry!

She exited out and read every email. By the time she was done, there was one last email left in the inbox.

Ana-chan. Please don’t ignore me. I really miss you and I’m sorry for anything I did. Please…just please talk to me again! Nothing is the same without you…
I feel…empty.

Her breath hitched in her throat and she read those last words again.

I feel empty.

Those words made her heart sink a thousand feet beneath her and she gripped the computer mouse tightly in her hand. She felt so guilty now. He had felt so lonely and desperate when she never replied to his emails. She could only imagine what it might’ve been like. And it was all her fault for letting her stubbornness get in the way.

“I’m sorry, Kazuki.” She whispered, placing a hand over her heart. It was right then and there that she knew. She had made up her mind. She was going find him tomorrow. She stood up abruptly and walked towards the kitchen.

“Mom! I have a favor to ask!”

---

It was the big day. She would find Kazuki today, no matter what. She stood in front of a massive school, a slip of paper with the directions in one hand and a couple printed emails in the other.
Seiso Academy. Yup it was the right place alright.

“Woah. It’s so…huge.” That was an understatement. She clutched the slip of paper tightly and walked forward, in hopes of finding the office. Students in white uniforms and black uniforms stared at her strangely, whispering amongst themselves. She kept walking, ignoring the whispering, until something caught her eye. Well rather some people.

There was a group of people sitting around some trees and bench, laughing and talking. She guessed it was lunch since they had bentos placed on their laps. She stopped in her tracks and stared at them, not really aware that she was. There were two girls, one with red hair and the other with light green-blue, and there were five boys, one with dark green hair, one with blue hair, one with silky purple hair, a sleeping one with blonde hair, and the last one with lighter green hair. The one with light green hair stood out the most to her as he was jumping around in a hyper manner.

“I think she’s looking at us…” The one with dark green hair interrupted, nodding his head towards Diana’s direction. Everyone in the group stopped talking and looked over at her, much to Diana’s dismay. The attention was unnerving, but her soft brown eyes never left the light green haired boy’s figure. Something in her heart told her he had to be the one. Actually, her heart was screaming at her.

“Yeah…” The light green haired boy took a step forward, something inside him telling him. But what? His golden eyes met her brown ones, never once breaking the contact. He felt that if he broke the contact, then she’d disappear. His heart suddenly started hammering in his chest and his hands got clammy. Then only one thought ran across his mind. Diana.

Her body automatically started running towards him, not really caring if it crept him out. She knew he was him. Her heart was telling her it was. And she never went against its words. Luckily, he welcomed her into his arms, her head hitting his chest. Warmth filled her body and her shattered heart from before began mending itself.

“I finally found you, Kazu-kun.” She buried her face into his chest and smiled. He wrapped his arms around her hesitantly.

“I’m sorry, Ana-chan.” He apologized sadly and she looked up at him.

“Silly goose! I should be the one saying sorry. I never intended to ignore your emails.” She giggled cutely, earning a blush from the ever-favourite trumpet player. She embraced him again and grinned. “At least we found each other.”

Her heart cleared up as the weight on her shoulders magically disappeared. Everything fit together now. Her jealousy, his words, their fate.

It was truly love at first sight.

Er…

Love at first write.
