LOZ Fanfiction: Chapter Eighteen
~Chapter Eighteen- The Master Sword~

Link’s day after her saved Lord Jabu-Jabu and Zora’s Domain with Zelda, Impa, and Ruto was rather slow for him. First thing he did after waking up was placing the chainmail from the Zora Armor under his tunic. Because Zelda was exhausted from her fight with Morpha and was bedridden the entire day, Ruto took that chance to be with Link; she had not let go of Link’s arm for three straight hours, when Impa pulled Link aside and handed him something.

“Normally Princess Zelda would be the one teaching you this, but once more, I have to be your mentor, Link.” She placed a blue ocarina to Link’s heart. Impa had taught Link everything he knew about swordfighting and whenever they sparred, Impa was always able to beat him. “Now that we have all three stones, I can tell you the next phase of our plan. Ganondorf most likely is planning something disasterous and according to the prophecy, the Master Sword will prevent an oncoming disaster in the hour of doom.”

Link nodded and examined the Ocarina.

“That Ocarina is the last key needed to obtain the Master Sword, but that is not all. Before the altar, in the Temple of Time, you must play a song known as the Song of Time.”

They had spent the rest of the day practicing the song, so that no time would be wasted on getting the sword. Surprisingly, Link caught on faster for someone who had never played an instrument before. They had planned to set out for Castle Town the next day to get the sword. While Link was getting the sword, she hoped to take Zelda to meet up with Warro and Kuro to thank them for their help. She also hoped to get Kuro her spot in the Royal Guard back. Of course, when you’re with Link or Zelda, nothing goes to plan: a tremor shook the domain and a Zora approached Impa shortly after.

“Miss Impa, I saw it!”

“Saw what?” she asked.

“Castle Town, ma’am! It’s under attack!”

“No!” Impa rushed to Zelda’s room to wake her up, when she could be heard yelling, “PRINCESS!” Link, once again was stunned by the tone of Impa’s voice. He rushed over to see what was wrong and as he entered their room, he found that Zelda had disappeared. Floating around her bed were small orange glimmers of light. “It has to have been those witches that you two saw. Link, if those witches are working for Ganondorf, they must be in the city! Let’s go!”

“Miss Impa, if I may suggest, perhaps my friend and I could take you down the river ourselves. We have nor problem, especially when our ally is under attack. Send word to your King that we are sending reinforcements.”

“Your king already approved this motion?” Impa asked.

“He has.”

“Efficient as always. C’mon, we have to get moving!”Impa and Link hurried out of the domain and jumped into the river, where the Zora’s took them to the entrance of the castle. As they exited the water, a Zora told them that they had to return to their king to tell him that they had arrived safely. They ran over to the drawbridge to Castle Town, which had been broken by Ganondorf. The smell of smoke was strong as they hurried inside. Ganondorf was razing Castle Town and Hyrule Castle! She thought that the tower of smoke could be seen from as far as Lake Hylia. Impa withdrew her dagger as Link brandished his sword and shield. They could smell smoke amongst the cries of the civilians as the Hylian Knights fell. “Hurry, Link! To the Temple!”

As he ran up the steps, the the sun set and the night of terror had begun for Hyrule. Link turned around the corner and then—CLANG! Red eyes stared into his own as Link recognized who the attacker was: Dark Link. Link jumped back and swung his sword at Dark Link, only to be met by the dark blade of his doppelganger. As he brought his blade up for another attempt, it slammed against Dark Link’s and snapped in half. If Dark Link had a mouth, Link knew that it would be a mischevious grin as it backed away. Link held up his shield and prepared to make a break for the Temple, when suddenly a Deku Nut was thrown. Dark Link staggered back from the bright light as Impa appeared before Link.

“Go! I’ll hold him off! I told you before, YOU must weild the Master Sword! Now, go!” Link stared at Impa as Dark Link recovered. “I’ll hold him off as long as I can. Now, go!”

Link nodded and rushed toward the Temple of Time and was nearly cut in half by Dark Link, when Impa’s dagger blocked the blade. She grunted as she looked at Link. He knew he had to hurry. Impa’s movements were slower, because she had not fully recovered from her wounds. He entered the Temple as Dark Link accepted Impa’s challenge. Inside the Temple, Link grabbed the three spiritual stones and placed them onto the altar. He placed the Ocarina to his lips and took a teep breath. He closed his eyes and hoped that he could get the song right on his first try. He was lucky; he played the Song of Time successfully, as if it were simply pressing buttons on a contraption, and the Triforce Emblem above a large strone door shined. The door slide aside, revealing a large, open room with a single window. In the darkness, Link could see a sword glowing. He ran into the room and approached the sword. Its blue handle felt so fitting in his hand. He game it a tug and it came out of the pedestal. Link felt power surging through him and for some reason, he thought he could sense Ganondorf’s presence. He rushed outside of the Temple to help Impa with the fight, but what he returned to see instead infuriated him.

Outside of the temple, just as Link exited, Dark Link’s blade pierced through Impa, coming out her back. As she fell, Link let out the loudest yell he could muster. He slashed his sword over and over, blinded by tears as his mentor and friend fell. Dark Link was jumping back, seemingly afraid of the Master Sword, before it saw an opening. It jumped up and brought it’s blade down upon Link.

“HAAAAA!” Link gave a tearful cry as he swung his blade diagonally across Dark Link’s body. The Master Sword cut through Dark Link as if he were just air and severed him from his lower half. Link stabbed Dark Link in the back before walking away and kneeling down next to Impa. Tears rolled down his eyes as he held her up.

“Link, you have to be strong,” she said weakly. “I… I knew I was not going to survive this fight. If it was to protect Hyrule, though… maybe it wasn’t in vain at all…” She took a deep breath and muttered. “Tell Zelda, when you find her, that the secret to… her strength… lies… in… the… heart…” Impa’s eyes closed and her head fell to the side. Link held back his tears as he sensed Ganondorf, this time stronger than ever. He looked up and walking up the steps was the man himself.

“My, this was unexpected,” he said, looking over to Dark Link. “I did not count on you getting the Master Sword. That sword was all you needed to tip the scales. So, now, boy…” Ganondorf approached Link. “You’ve come for me, right? Well, take a gander at this.” He pointed to his head. Around it was a crown, but not just any crown. It was the King’s crown. Link gripped the Master Sword, glaring at Ganondorf. It was his fault all this happened! It was his fault Impa died! It was his fault that Zelda was kidnapped! He had enough fury inside of him to pierce Ganondorf through the heart and slice him to ribbons. He rushed toward the Gerudo King and swung his sword once and missed. A second, missed. A third, missed again.

“Ha, ha, ha, ha, HAAAAA!” Link swung his sword over and over, not understanding why he was not hitting a man who had not even lifted a finger to stop his attacks, when suddenly his arm was grabbed.

“Kid, you’re bringing shame to that sword, swinging it like a little kid having a temper tantrum. If you’re planning to fight, then fight with all you got.” A golden light shined on the back of Ganondorf’s right hand as he brought his fist back. Dark energy swirled around it and then he swung it forward. As the first smashed into Link’s stomach, all the sounds, all he saw, everything blurred all together as Link fell to the ground, blood dripping from his mouth. His eyes closed and Ganondorf sighed. “A shame that the only threat was so weak.” He looked at the Master Sword and reaced for it, when he gripped his hand. “Not a smart idea.” He turned and walked away amongst the flames of Castle Town. Where he was heading? To what remained of Hyrule Castle: his new headquarters.
