Life is as sudden as a streaking white flash of lightning in the dark blue night sky.
It comes at us in a bright white light from the doctor’s fluorescents bulbs.
First breath rushes in like the golden rays of the sun through my eyelids.
Sending my whole body into a shrieking start as I cry.
First steps, first words, everything is documented.
Parents afraid of a tiny scarlet strip on your knee.
Rushing to you in a fierce speed, asking too many questions.
Times like these seem to come and go but never seem to be serene.
Nervous day begins as you enter elementary.
Learning all your ABC’s, 123’s and even your colors
You come home and get another bombardment of questions asked
Making you feel like the cherry red Corvette on the car lot.
Moving from state to state, city to city
It’s never easy and never fun
Making new friends but losing old ones
Coming and going, laughing and crying, these are the consequences of a Navy brat.
Moving to a new town and just staring high school
Not sure if your clothes are right or if your hairs is cut correctly
Stepping through the archway of a new life and a new school
Sending mixtures of fear and anxiety through your whole body
Final day of high school starts at eight
Making you jump and laugh and scream all day
Having a whole day of wonderful bliss
But then the big question hits and it makes you look green and ill…will I graduate
Judgment day past and jobs far done
Retirement coming to its final vacation
Lying in bed with a smile on your face and as white as a ghost
Death.
