Shop fronts [Durem]
Edit: I have posted and mentioned that I worked on all the Durem shops in other threads yet I feel like I'm being ignored (or don't care I even posted) and no one wants to address the issue to me but instead I see people discuss among themselves demeaning the way I made some of the shops. If you have an issue with the shop illustrations, take it up with me.

Sucks that some didn't like half the Durem shops I worked on especially since I actually had fun working on all of them and I was so excited to see finally out. Not gonna say as to why things came to be because I know too well that it's going to end up being a blamefest razz

-Yes, I worked on all the Durem shops
-Yes, I had fun painting them and in fact spent considerable amount of time on each one.
-I looked at a ton of references of actual shops, how the mannequins needed to be displayed in large enough windows. I thought using mannequins was weird because no tattoo parlor uses a mannequin to show their art.
-I wanted to experiment with working in different perspectives and angles.
-Butt mannequins can be found in the men's underwear section in your local Macy*s.

Skin Tyte apparently was hit hardest for looking too seedy or something. I'm thinking of redoing it but I cannot guarantee it. Sorry for failing Skin Tyte.

Well, I'm glad everything for the shops is done and out there.
Now my illustration of Grutak for the summer swirl RIG.

Don't let people get you down!

People are complaining about not liking the store fronts? Good god, major entitlement-issues right there. The majority probably bitching instead of leaving helpful feedback, as well. The only thing that I see that doesn't really work is the fact that no glass is noticeable in the shop windows. That can be easily remedied by adding another layer and fiddling with transparency. Sorry you're getting such smack over this.

*tilts head left, then right*

"Seedy" isn't the first word that comes to mind when I look at Skin Tyte...it isn't even one of the first ten!

People'll complain just for the sake of complaining!

If anyone noticed in that thread, even after she posted people don't want to address the issue to her upfront but rather make a public display and embarrass further. Like this quote here:
Quote:
Someone designed the building and then passed it off to a person who has never owned a computer
taught them about MS paint and copy paste
went to get pictures of tattoos
and has a jolly good ol' time decorating the front.

When I first saw the announcement, I didn't think I'd like the shop fronts...but once I actually saw them, I love them all...great job Buki and to the rest of the artists.

Thanks so much for your hard work, and ******** all the naysayers.

I just went to look at them and I don't see what the problem is. confused People were upset that you used the actual tattoo pictures on Skin Tyte and posted them up like Flash? Seriously?

I don't see anything wrong with Durem's storefronts.

One of my friends said that the new fronts were very nice and made Gaia seem more like a world again and not just a website.
I agree. <3

Durem Depot looks great to me. I don't like the wigs in Salon Durem, too many people fussing about making hairstyles wigs to me. sweat: The only problem I have with Skin Tyte is it doesn't look like a tattoo parlor. It looks rather plain.

I'm probably biased against Natasha and Devin though. My favorite wound up being Back Alley Bargains. 4laugh

I still don't visit yet forums, but I did check the stores. They're GREAT! All of them! I was so happy and so proud to be a Gaian when I saw it!
And I'm pretty much a b***h sometimes, so If I say this it's not to be a fanboy, but because it's INDEED a great work!

The only thing that could be improved (IMHO) is the banner at Skin Tyte. You could make it with more soaked (I don't know if it's the right term >_> ) in the wood.

EDIT: Grutak is the second picture I see from you that I don't know what exactly is and I totally want it Y_Y

I haven't been to the GCD or Sf yet so I haven't seen the bitching!
But I don't see a problem with any of them...

At first I didn't think I'd like it but woah, they look good. I'm kinda of sad it took over the shop homepage though...But I'll get used to it :]

ALL OF THE DUREM ONE'S ARE THE BEST. I LIKE THEM THE MOST.
However Skin Tyte is my least favorite of Durem....I still like it though so well done Buki!

commentCommented on: Fri Jun 26, 2009 @ 09:13pm
I rather liked them. I think perhaps that people are being jerks because you didn't happen to paint storefronts that fit in with their preconceived notions of what those storefronts looked like. Don't let them bother you too badly ... although I know it's rough to hear that people dislike something you created.

And Grutak illustrations are win.

I like all the Durem shops! And Skin Tyte is supposed to look seedy! It's a Tattoo Parlor! Have you ever seen one that wasn't even a bit seedy?

commentCommented on: Fri Jun 26, 2009 @ 09:30pm
You love your WoW and I love that you love WoW! xd

Doing store fronts is tricky. You have to represent what the store is about. I think you did that very well with Durem Depot. You also have to capture the spirit of the city. I think whoever did the stores for Gambino and Barton did an exceptional job of this.

I don't feel Skin Tyte captures the spirit of the city and is probably why it is getting hit the hardest. You wouldn't see a building like that in Durem. When I think of Durem I think of gothic and mystique.

Buki you are an AMAZING artist and I thank you for your time and hard work.

First off, I loooove those Grutak pictures.
Hah, his sad tummy ache pose is too cute.
X3

Second, I think people use the internet to be way more mean than they ever would be in real life.
They often don't understand that there's a real person on the receiving-end of their comments,
so they let loose these horribly demeaning and hateful words.
A lot of people need to grow up and learn some manners.

Anyway, I must say I love all the new shops.... except Skin Tyte.
I'm sorry, but it definitely does NOT look seedy, and I really think it should.
A lot of people probably have a problem with it because it's been in the manga, and it look completely different.
And while I don't think you need to change it to look exactly like that, I agree with those who say it lacks Durem's aesthetic.
Btw, I absolutely love the buliding next to Skin Tyte, along with the tree and sky.
c:
They just seem more like they belong in Barton as opposed to Durem.

I'm sorry to hear you're getting such bad flack (I can't believe the quote someone above me posted). sad I haven't really invested myself into any threads about the storefronts.

If it will help any, here's some unbiased feedback:

General: Different angles...FTW. It's a simple touch that adds a lot.

Durem Depot: It's fabulous. Great personality and it really feels like alternative-style Durem.

H&R Weasley: I think the Greek columns (or are they Roman, I've always gotten column styles confused xD) are good; straight, formal, fancy, just like Edmund. However, I just think that it could be taken further, and a lot more towards the Gothic architecture Durem is better known for. If anyone would have a finer appreciation of arches and gargoyle infested water ducts, it would be a Renaissance man like Edmund.

Salon Durem: It doesn't really suit my personal taste, but looking at it from a critical standpoint, there's really nothing to complain about. It's simple and yet unique. You added fun colors and little details to give a plain building some good personality. Vanessa's not going to care about a bunch of architectural details and doesn't need a bunch of gaudy frills (she has enough gaudy frills...if you know what I mean xD). She just wants you to notice the building so you'll go inside and give her money to dye your hair some color your mother would slap you for IRL.

Skin Tyte: There's a good bit of comedic value in it being next door a quaint, innocent-looking little house; but it doesn't feel like Skin Tyte is IN Durem so much as these are a couple of Gaians that decided to build a Durem-style shop in the middle of, say, Barton. Skin Tyte itself looks very fitting for Durem. I only wish the sign were more colorful (It's a tattoo shop, why not tattoo the sign?), or some graffiti.

I thought the Shop Fronts were badass, not sure what the others were thinking. Then again, we're all know to have our insane moments.

Grutak is awesome. <333 I was afraid of his giant horns, but now I've realized that his stomach can eat me too. twisted

Ignore haters, many of them are just spoiled or immature kids who don't know what they want, I believe you did a great job with the shops, and if for some reason someone doesn't like them that's ok, but they should not start talking sh*t just because.
Don't feel bad I think they're cool, I also liked Grutak, it gave the swirl a nice touch.

From what I've heard around the forums, everyone loves all the storefronts in general, and are just a bit displeased that Skin Tyte looks different than it does in the Manga.(1) Its great that you enjoyed yourself working on them, and I can tell that you put alot of qualilty and effort into them. I really do love all the shop fronts myself. But, as like the rest of Gaia, the Skin Tyte exterior is pretty 'plane' compared to the store owners and interior.

Its really easy to get into your own work, I know, that you dont think to check if someone has done what your doing before; I think thats what happened here, and I dont blame you for it. ^^

Whatever you decide, make sure you give yourself time to relax, okay? <3

(1)Your version of Skin Tyte vs the Manga's

commentCommented on: Sat Jun 27, 2009 @ 04:46am
My only complaint is, while the rest of the shops seem to match the world map versions to a point, at least in Durem, but the tattoo parlor is actually a tower and it kinda looks like. A err. ;___; Box? It's just a little weird to me is all, but not that big of a deal really. xp

I don't think it was a failure though. You did do a great job on them all. All the flame is totally unwarranted, but that's just gaia know, I guess.

Personally, I think they're all fab. If I had to point out one thing I don't like, it would be the actual door of Skin Tyte. It looks different from the rest of the picture and kind of takes you out of it a little, you know? But seedy? Hells yeah, the more seedy, the better. ^_^ It's a tattoo parlor! I've always felt it was a little seedy, and I wouldn't mind it if you amped it up a bit.

commentCommented on: Sat Jun 27, 2009 @ 07:24am
I must have missed those posts, but that makes me sad sad
I thought that the decision to add storefronts was great, and would appease those people complaining that the shops wern't shop-like anymore. It seemed like a great comprimise that would make the shops seem more like they were a part of the world, etc.

I didn't see any problem with the way the shops themselves were designed. I've seen posts in the GCD complaining that you couldn't see items on the shelves in stores anymore, like the old days. With as many items as we have now, it's totally impractical for it to be like that anymore, but I thought that the displays in the store windows were a great touch! (And I've seen those butt-displays for underwear before. I thought it was great)

This probably just sounds like a lot of a**-kissing, but I felt I should post at least a little somthing positive in the tide of hate of the massive BAWWWfest. :/

I'm only seeing one tiny problem. Maybe it's just my computer, but at Salon Durem the frames for the door and windows are on the right side of the picture. o.o'
Other than that...is nice. X3

I'm glad that you're considering redoing skin tyte's design.
I really enjoyed the design it had in the manga, and even though I understand that the shopfronts are supposed to be all new because of the SOS event, I still found the result disappointing.
Athough other than that, I really didn't have a problem with the other shop fronts.
I thought they were well done.

I don't understand the issue. The haters seem to be nit-picking this time. Durem's shops are all fine. The Salon is maybe a little on the bland side, maybe, but I could imagine seeing a salon in the real world adopt that minimalist sort of style. Skin Tyte was actually one of my favorite of the storefronts, I loved the very realistic move of putting tattoo options on the front door. I think The Jock Strap is my favorite over all, but the Durem storefronts are fine to the vast majority of users, I'm sure. Don't worry.

I do think the storefronts have led to a navigation failure, because I don't know why Trade and the Marketplace sub-options had to be removed from the main navigation bar. I used those links a great deal, it's frustrating that they're gone. I understand losing the big list of stores, it was bulky and cluttery, but the other links were intensely useful. I know it's not your department, but I hope they'll reconsider.

I appreciate that you are willing to take credit for your work and I appreciate that you are willing to reconsider your work in the face of user upset.
I hope you do decide to revisit Skin Tyte’s design and create something that matches the manga or the Town Map or any reference of Skin Tyte that is already there and has been for some time. There was such great consideration given to the other stores- H.R. Wesley’s exterior really suits its new interior shop design, and all of the Barton stores match their Town Map and zOMG and interior designs so well, and it’s just a shame to see Skin Tyte falling by the wayside,
even if a lot of effort and research were already put into making it look like a shop that might exist somewhere else.

I do hope you will redraw Skin Tyte and give the ol’ girl a look that actually matches the building we’ve all already seen and know exists. And if you do choose to redo Skin Tyte and need help finding a reference, HERE WE ARE. Make a public request anywhere on Gaia and we’ll send you everything, from every snippet of its existing artwork we can find for you to our own fan-made conceptions of what the store actually looks like.

P.S. I like chubby Grutak. He makes me giggle.

I have to say, I love the shop front for Durem Depot. It's awesome, really!
I don't think 'Skin Tyte' is bad, maybe I imagined it a bit more goth, idk. I think it's just missing a little something, maybe some funky graffitti and UV lighting would look cool. It really isn't bad how it is now though, it's just a little different from how I imagined it xD

commentCommented on: Tue Jun 30, 2009 @ 06:13pm
As far as I know about the town map reference, I remember it was just a randomly chosen building and not how we really wanted 'Skin Tyte' to look.

Does it matter if the decision making process wasn't thought-out or considerate when the building on the map was first chosen? Wouldn't it be better to focus on being more thoughtful and mindful of those sorts of things now?
I'm not trying to attack you. Crap happens, you can't please everyone, and there will always be someone who doesn't like the way this item layers or that design was drawn. I get that.
But at the same time it'd be nice to know that the artists here are at least aware of their own collective body of work. Even if the building labeled "Skin Tyte" on that map of Durem was chosen at random, does it really matter now? Skin Tyte has been associated with that building for quite some time [it's been over two years now], so there sits a valid and [in my opinion anyway] darn important reference for any other image that's supposed to represent that store.

I do hope you decide to redo the store drawing. I get that you put effort into making it look like images of other tattoo stores, and not to mention in actually executing the design itself, but it just doesn't jive with the rest of the art for Skin Tyte,
and I just know you're more than capable of making it do so.
