Rose: Learning about the Problem

It was only going to take a few hours. No one was answering my questions, except that one.

As we ran, I looked for any signs of civilization. After all, if we're heading toward the largest Kitsune city on Gaia, shouldn't there be... something?

But it happened so fast.

I tried to pull out my wand when I realized something was amiss. We weren't even all stopped yet, but there had been... a darkening of the forest, and it was hushed, as if all the animals were in hiding. I now knew that my kitsune senses were responsible for all the times I'd known that there was trouble nearby.

But... I was ill equipped. I had tried to pull my wand out. Duh. I don't have a wand to pull out right now. I don't know about any of my kitsune fighting or defensive abilities.

So the hushed darkness that was at first only perceived as a kind of heightened sense dropped down on our group.

Sahm fought them, as did two of the other kitsunes. The attackers were... dark. Like shadows. Hard to discern what they were. I saw Sahm look back at me and catch my eye, and something he and Kyrre had said, before, struck me. The other kitsune up for the throne- the nephew Estefan or whatever- had some dark ties. Kyrre's band were mostly renegades now, no longer following direct orders. Protecting the kitsunes from the other species living in northern South Gaia; demons.

I growled- something I didn't know I could do, but felt right. I was part demon- usually. And I'd already learned that most full demons were responsible for the stereotypes that went with the name.

The air around us was growing darker by the second, and all I could do to fight was use my claws and teeth. I tried, but I really didn't know what I was doing. Thankfully, Sahm was there, and the other two kitsunes, as well. Weren't... weren't there three of them?

But it did happen suddenly. Sahm kept near me, and was trying to help me find the light again. We were all close together. But our snarls weren't the only ones out there, and the little bubble of kitsunes surrounding me fluctuated- were pulled further away and also retreated back in as they faced our enemies. Suddenly, one of the kitsunes that was pulled away didn't return, and I heard a gurgling sound. I stepped away from my bubble for a minute- toward the sound, like a reaction.

But a kitsune was returning to the spot. The sound had to have been from a demon. I sighed, and, through the last bit of light that still filtered through, I could see a foot in front of me, and that was all. I smiled as the kitsune came up close to me, and was about to make sure he was all right- when I saw his face.

There is blood around his mouth. I'm sure that's normal, attacking with one's teeth. His eyes look fierce- but don't mine when I fight? He looks... more determined than angry. A seasoned soldier, then. But... this wasn't Lial or Grewin, which I think were the names of the two with me and Sahm. This was the one that had gotten separated. This was Regg.

Confusion must have swept over my face as I opened my mouth, because his expression changed in response. He looked smug.

The world went black.
