CHAPTER 2: Bell pushed the buzzer on the side of the door. Within a few moments Bell saw Yuki scrambling to answer the door. She opened the door a crack to peak out to see who it was. “Oh Bell it’s just you. Come in.” Yuki said with a relieved look on her face. Bell took a few steps threw the door before she jumped in fright as she heard the door slam loudly behind her. “Dang that’s the second time today I almost had a heart attack.” Bell complained, as she turned around she saw that Yuki was wrapped in a bath towel. “I was going to ask back there why you were acting like you were scared of the world or something, but now I can see why you hid behind the door.” Bell said with sarcasm. “Well if you would call before just showing up randomly, maybe I would actually have some clothes on.” Yuki hissed back. ”Aw come on give me a break, I’ve had the worst day of my life to-“ ‘Don’t finish that sentence, let me go up and change, and then I’ll hear your pity story.” Without another word, Yuki zoomed up her stairs to change. Bell let out a long sigh and nonchalantly walked into her living room, to take a load off. She plopped on the couch and stared up at the ceiling. Bell had known Yuki for about two years, and Yuki was the only one that knew Bell’s secret. As Bell began to take a journey threw her memories, she heard the slam of a door, and the hurried shuffle of feet coming down the stairs. Yuki entered the room dressed in a pair of green pj’s and a bathrobe that clung loosely on her body. “You know just because you’re a welcomed guest in my house you could have a little bit more manners.” Said Yuki looking down as she tied her wet long brown hair up into a messy ponytail. Bell realized that she was still laying on the couch with her feet up on the arm rest. She jerked up, and sat politely on the far right of the couch. As Bell opened her mouth to speak she was cut off as Yuki said, “Let me go get us some drinks real quick. I’ll be right back.” Yuki ran out of the room, and within moments she returned with two glasses of ice tea in her hands. Bell reached out her hand to receive the glass, as Yuki handed her the glass, she immediately jerked her hand away from Bell’s. “What’s wrong?” Asked Bell noticing Yuki’s painful expression. “Oh it’s nothing…. my hand just brushed up against yours. I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to how cold you are. I mean every time I touch you your skin is like below zero freezing, it’s so cold it hurts to touch you. But enough of that, what brings you to my humble abode this late at night? I thought you had work today.” Yuki said as she sat in an armchair next to where Bell was sitting. Bell winced as Yuki said the word work. “Well that’s what I wanted to talk about…my work.” Bell said remorsefully. “Don’t let me guess you got fired right?” “Yup, congratulations you win a hundred thousand yen for getting the question right.” Bell paused for a second and continued to speak, “I was late again. Mr. Yamakawa just couldn’t take enough of it, so he fired me. It’s not my fault that school takes up the majority of my day.” Bell looked up at Yuki who had a distasteful look on her face. “Geez Bell, you sure get yourself into a lot of messes don’t you? So what are you going to do now?” asked Yuki sipping her tea in a delicate way. For as long as Bell could remember Yuki had always had a great respect for being polite and obeying the rules. She never once got in trouble, and every time Bell came over to eat dinner with her family, Yuki always tucked a napkin in her shirt, and always ate so delicately it looked as though she rehearsed it a million times to perfect it. Yuki had always been Bell’s best friend, even when Yuki found out Bell’s secret, she didn’t run away in fear, but showed Bell more friendship than anyone she ever met. Bell closed her eyes and calmly replied to answer Yuki’s question, “What am I going to do you ask? Well I’m going to find out something that has been bothering me for as long as I can remember. I’m going to find out where I come from.” Bell took a few large breathes and finished the last words that would end up causing her friend much pain, “In order for me to do this, it means that I’m going to have to leave Japan and return to my home country France.” Bell was not what you would call a normal high school girl. She may look 16, but Bell is actually a hundred and ninety nine years old. Bell felt that she herself was a freak of nature. Bell placed her hands over her over her eyes and began to speak. “For years I’ve wondered why I could make snow fall in the middle of July, and why I can create blizzards when I’m mad or how I can transform my body into a cold breeze and disappear from people’s sight. I constantly wonder why I don’t age, or why my skin is always unimaginably cold. Why am I half human and half Winter? There is no one else like me, or at least not that I know of. That’s why I have to leave, because I know that someone gave birth to me or created me. That person would know why I’m like this…. I need to find out.” There was a long pause before Bell heard Yuki’s reply. “Then go. I won’t stop you. This is your life story, so you need to write it the way you want it to be.” Bell slowly removed her hands from her eyes, and placed her hands in her lap. Bell’s eyes were opened wide in awement as Bell stared at Yuki. Bell desperately tried to search for the words that she could use to make sense of what just happened. “Y-you mean you w-won’t stop me? Won’t you miss me?” Bell managed to mouth out. “Well of course I’ll miss you dumbass, but all I what is for you to be happy. And if this is what will make you happy then I want you to do it, but won’t you need money and food to eat?” Yuki said crossing her legs on the armchair. “No I don’t need to eat, since I’m immortal I don’t need to eat or drink, however it is nice to be able to taste things once in awhile, but I’ll manage. As for travel issues I can just disapparate and fly to France.” Bell said as she stood up from the couch. Bell stretched out her arms, and yawned as she looked up at the clock. She needed to get home. It was already ten thirty. Yuki also stood up and placed her tea on a coaster near where she was sitting. “When are you leaving?” “Tomorrow.” Bell and Yuki walked side by side in silence to the front door. As Bell turned the doorknob Yuki placed her hand on top of Bell’s to stop her from turning it any further. “Do me a favor and come back when your done, and be careful. I’ll never forgive myself if anything bad happens to you.” Yuki said calmly, Yuki removed her hand from Bell’s. Bell stared into Yuki’s beautiful purple eyes, searching for any regret for saying goodbye. Even though Yuki acted as though she was strong in the situation at hand, Bell could see that in Yuki’s eyes that she never wanted to say goodbye. Yuki’s eyes looked as though they would never shine that same brightness until she knew that Bell would be coming home safely. Bell gave a slow nod and swung the door opened and stepped out into the cold night. Bell didn’t look back as she made her way home. Bell felt the silent tears start to fall as she stared up at the white moon. There were no twinkling specks of stars that night, to Bell it felt as though the sky wanted to cry with her as well. Bell wasn’t aware that just a few blocks away her troubles would begin again.
