MASSIVE SPOILERS. FAN INTERPRETATION OF THE ENTIRE CHAPTER 1 STORYLINE:

Chi, is a substance without mass or physic state. It permeates anything, objects, even other people. It is, in more accurate terms, life force. Gaia does too have Chi, only it goes by the name of Ghi.
Stamina, energy, is turned into life force, Ghi, and given to rings, by their users. People can easily compensate the energy loss by simply resting.
Rings always have a certain amount of Ghi in them. If they have more than that amount, they will expel the excess and materialize the Ghi into something different, depending on the rings nature. The new form doesn't last long and the Ghi dissipates to the atmosphere. The more Charge Orbs are put on a ring, the stronger the Ghi effect is, and the more Ghi is emanated from a single use.
People expel Ghi on their own passively, but generally very slowly. Rings have increased the rate at which it forms. And its concentration has increased too much.
When permeated by a lot of Ghi, some objects can contain it in themselves. Generally, they wouldn't have enough, but after a certain greenish explosion, the amounts of Ghi drastically increased. And a few animated appeared. These would die after a while on their own, without more Ghi input from the atmosphere, but...
The animated form new rings in themselves, allowing people to have a way to keep the concentration of Ghi increasing. Then, new animated are formed by this new concentration spike from ring usage, and the process goes in circles of increasing amounts each time.
Ghi, sometimes, forms a natural phenomena, called in the storyline a "Rift". It works like a sinkhole of Ghi and emanates it around it after gathering, forming stronger animated near it and weaker at far away distances. Rifts would theoretically dissipate and disappear after a while, without any new Ghi source being pulled to it, but not the one in the storyline, the one caused by the aforementioned Greenish Explosion. Not this one... Because of Labtech X's plan.
X's plan was to manipulate the Rift. Ghi is a special form of energy, and the energies contained in the Rift are MASSIVE. Enough to power a world destructive device, by self-replicating animated robotic components. His plans is to make these components, along with a control device, animate themselves to form a huge battle bot, and then lead it in a destruction rampage like Gaia never saw before.
But he can't directly tap in that energy. There's one thing he requires. Very powerful rings, the Ghi emanation devices and someone capable of using them. Someone with enough Ghi emanation that by just being close enough to the rift it would disturb it enough to "widen" it to the extent the energies expelled from the Rift at one time to be so, so MASSIVE, he could power his weapon without direct control over the majority of the Ghi flow.
So he finds a way. He actually helps gaia fight off the animated. He creates neXus and disguises them as G-corps to spread rings around gaia, thus creating the circle of ring usage and animation and truthfully increasing the Ghi amounts that would be pulled to the Rift. And hopefully, someone with enough mastery of Ring usage would appear. Someone with an emanation of Ghi so strong on his/her own, that if they used rings, they would alone fulfill X's own plans for him.
And one of his Labtechs, also known as FRANK, has found this person... and led him to his secret base, just nearby his rift. That person is YOU, the player. Every single one of you reading, the other players and myself. We are all but a delivery service for X's key item in his master plan: Our own body.
