Driving force of the action of the novel. What specific events conversation or decisions are direct results of these themes.

Themes- Family, Friendship, Father-son relationship.

It begins in the wealthy streets of Kabul, where Amir lives with his father Baba, and their servants Hassan, Amir's best friend, and Ali, Hassan's father. There he lives a life of leisure and The Kite Runner is about a Pashtun boy, Amir, growing up through tragedy, betrayal, and personal conflict. Growing up in Kabul and living a life of leisure with his distant and disappointed father Baba, his betrayal of Hassan, his best friend, servant, and secret half-brother. Hassan, who is brave, kind and endlessly loyal to Amir. There is nothing more important to Hassan that Amir is happy.
-Amir is the main character of the Kite Runner, this protagonist is unique in that he doesn't have the usuall qualities found in protagonist.
-Hassan leaving

Friendship- The dynamics of friendship was no-doubt the most prominent theme in the Kite Runner. Hassan and Amir's relationship is the driving force of the novel.
Their betrayal, forgiveness, jealousy, admiration and loyalty provide metaphors for social conflicts raging in Afghanistan and in humanity.
-Amir's view of the friendship vs Hassan's.
Amir believes that Hassan is his best-friend, he cares for him and
The fact that Mair doens't understand the importance and value his friendship with Hassan leads him to the ultimate decision, between saving Hassan and winning Baba's love. In the end of course, he realizes that he made the wrong choice and that in his attempt to win Baba's love he ultimately failed in proving that he was a son worthy of Baba's expectations as a good and strong person.
Examples- Amir throwing pomegranates at Hassan. 93

Family- Wife, Wife's mom and dad, baba, Rahim Khan, the importance of Amir's mother. The difference between Amir's Family in America vs. Kabul.

Father/son relationship: Baba is a very strong and brave man. Esteemed for his courage and an over-all "hero" character, because of this he has always been ashamed of Amir for his cowardliness and his crying, meaning that Amir was lacking a sense of love from his parents. Lacking a mother and needed the affection, Amir set his goal to gain Baba's love. This relationship of Father and Son is Amir's motivation for most of his actions. Because of his ultimate goal to prove himself to Baba and receive the love and affection that he is denied and years for so desperately, leads to his betray of Hassan in the rape scene. This relationship transitions throughout the book, most notably when Baba and Amir move to America, In all ways Baba gradually becomes different. He is a striking contrast to the Baba of Kabul, no longer rich, no longer reveread around the city he lives, he even looses his physique and physical strenght, a metaphor to match his emotional strength. In America we see that Baba now appreciates his son's skill and is proud that he is educated. Clearly stating to General Taheri "Amir is going to be a great writer,"(139, Hosseini) Baba-Amir132,79., Ali-Hassan, the effect of not having mothers, Baba-Hassan(133)(90)
"You bring me shame. And Hassan....Hassan's not going anywhere, do you understand?".
"It happened just the way I'd imagined. I opened the door to the smoky study and stepped in. Baba and Rahim Khan were drinking teas and listening to the news crackling on the radio. Their heads turned. Then a smile played on my father's lips. He opened his arms. I put the kite down and walked into his thick hairy arms. I buried my face in the warmth of his chest and wept. Baba held me close to him, rocking me back and forth. In his arms, I forgot what I'd done. And that was good."
