By the time I'd been prodded by yet another new rheumatologist, waited for trhe library to open so i could sort things out before my trip, ran a couple errands, called the anesthesiologist, and delt with Hector puking on my bed, there was no chance of sleep, so I went to see Iron Man. After all, i had a free pass about to expire. Parts of it were excellent, but other bits really dragged. there was excellent chemistry between Robert Downey jr. and Mister Cheadle and those scenes really popped. I also rather liked the chemistry between Ms. Paltrow and Ms. Johanssen. Mr Rourke was just fine, and while I thought Mr. Rockwell was rather overdone, he seemed to be having fun. I just wished there were plot twists or even a single surprise in the thing. I am wondering if the problem is how little I know of Marvel Comics. I mean, I know I'd seen the outfit before, likely among the superhero action figure collection a friend I had whgen I was four and I used to play with, but I'm not sure I knew which one he was before they started showing trailers for the first movie. I mean, I'm very fond of Mr. Jackson, but I have no clue who Nick fury is or why he matters. I mean, i get that he's recruiting for some sort of justice League type thing, but the scenes he was in seemed to rely on a subtext I was missing. similarly, it was obvious I was meant to know who Ms. johanssen's character was and why she was cool and important, but I don't. It hinted at coolness, but there was no backstory or motivation. I pick up myustery shows fifteen minutes or so in quite often and am generally good at quickly establishing relationships and guilt, but it means I often miss some establishing nuance. I felt like this in this movie even though I watched it from the beginning. I could pick up the broad outlines of what was going on and predict what was goning to happen in the future, but I'm missing the nuance and sometimes the point.
