Chapter Four: Visiting and Lunch/ Spring 24th

It was starting to get late. Elli was starting to wonder where Adam was. But of course he was drunk the night before, so he was probably having a hangover. Idiot. She then saw Rusty run up ahead and into the office with Adam’s bag around his waist.

As soon as Rusty saw Elli, he charged at her and licked her face. “Sit Rusty!!” Rusty plopped on the floor as his tail wagged like crazy. She took the bag off him as she rubbed his head softly. She opened up the main pocket, and of course the herbs. She looked into one of the smaller side pockets and found a leash, with a small note on it. “Hey, sorry I didn’t come today. I would like you to come by the ranch again today. I’m not so stable on my feet. Also, could you bring Rusty home? Thanks.”

She sighed as she picked up the bag and went into the doctor’s office. “Excuse me sir, but Adam won’t be coming in today, but his dog brought the herbs.” Trent slowly lifted his head from the desk. He looked like a ghost. Was every man getting drunk last night? “Oh… okay…” He held out his hand as Elli put the bag on his palm. He replaced the herbs with money as he held the bag out for her again. As she took the bag she remembered what she was going to ask. “Also doctor, I wondering if I could get off work early…” Trent yawned. “That’s fine. Could you close the Clinic when you leave?” He soon fell asleep at his desk again. Elli took the bag off his hand as she put it on her shoulders and linked the leash to Rusty’s collar.

She walked out the door and locked it. “Stupid men…” Rusty led her down the street as he sniffed everything left and right. She waved at Duke who smiled and waved back. It seemed he had Cliff as a helper now. She continued to drag Rusty behind her as she reached the ranch. Cows, sheep, and Adam’s horse were out today. Rusty started to tug at the leash as she untied it. He dashed into the fields and started to bark at the crows in the crop area of the field. She couldn’t see Adam anywhere in the fields. She then thought he could be inside. “It’s very possible considering how hurt he must feel from yesterday…”

She knocked on the door and waited outside, she heard pots and pans clang behind the door and then large boots thudding against the floor. Adam opened the door. “You’re here earlier than I expected.” He seemed somewhat pale, but that was probably from the night before. He also had flour and eggs on an apron he was wearing. “You want to come inside?” She shook her head. “No, I’ll pass.” Adam chuckled as he pulled her inside. “I insist.” He closed the door then walked to the kitchen and continued whatever he was doing. “Oh, by the way, I wanted to thank you for walking me home yesterday. I probably would’ve been found on the side of the road somewhere.” Elli looked up. “Oh… No problem…”

She felt a little weird being inside his house. “What is he cooking?” She wanted to ask him, but then she may have sounded hungry or something. After what seemed like a long silence, Adam finally spoke. “Um… would you like something to eat?” “No! I’m fine!” Her stomach then rumbled. Adam started to laugh so hard it looked like he was going to piss his pants. She felt her face turn a light red. “I think your little gut there says otherwise.” He stuck his tongue out at her as her face went redder.

“It’s not a gut! It’s a tummy! I have no gut! Besides why do you have me here?! If we were just going to have lunch together, I wouldn’t have come!” He looked at her kind of surprised. “I can’t make you lunch for being thankful?” He sighed. “I need your help putting the animals away. I’m still light headed from yesterday…” He threw her a sandwich. Elli couldn’t catch for her life so the bagged sandwich flew right by her head. Luckily, the sandwich was still in contact. “Why didn’t you catch it?” Elli walked over and picked up the sandwich. “I can’t catch… Next time don’t throw it.” Adam nodded as he had plates under his arms, his sandwich in his mouth, and two glasses of lemonade in both of his hands. Elli snorted and started to laugh. “What?” He looked at her while setting down the plates. She continued to snort and laugh. “Just join me at lunch, goof.”

Elli wiped her eyes as she sat down at the table and unzipped the baggy her sandwich was in. She began to eat. “Wow! This is really good! What’s in it?” She regretted the words as soon as they left her lips. “Um… Lettuce, Tomato, Onion… and I think some fish…” Elli’s face went blank. It tasted like chicken… “Um… how’s Emily doing?” Adam looked up from trying to pick out some tomato. “Oh, she’s fine! She’s looking better than ever. She got deadly sick for awhile though.” Elli felt chills go down her spine. “He didn’t…” Adam noticed her face and laughed. “But she’s right on top again. Don’t worry, I’m a vegetarian. I couldn’t dare eat animals besides fish.” Elli let out a sigh of relief. “Thank god…”

She smelled the air. “Is something burning?” Adam sniffed the air and had a blank expression on his face. “Oh s**t! The cookies!!!!” Adam almost tripped over his chair while getting to the oven. “Ugh… They’re a tiny bit burned…” He let out a heavy sigh as Elli stood up at took a cookie from the tray. She took a small bit from it. “They taste fine.” She smiled softly as he blushed slightly. “R-Really?” He took a cookie from the tray as well as he took a small bite. “You’re right!” He laughed as she chuckled and continued to eat the cookies, as he did too. Shortly there were only 5 cookies left when Adam said he had to save them for something. Elli looked at the clock. “I have to get going Adam. I have work to do.” “Oh…” Adam put the cookies in his cupboard as he led her to the door. “Hopefully, I’ll see you soon?” Elli gave him a weird look as she laughed slightly. “You’ll see me tomorrow at work.” She waved as she ran off. She noticed Adam going outside and ringing a bell as the animals shuffled into the barn. She began to hear something in the distance. She turned and saw thunder clouds rolling in not too far away. “Oh my… I better hurry back to the clinic….” No sooner than she spoke, she felt a sharp icy sting on her nose then more on her arms and head. It began to rain, and it was a very cold and shrill rain.

She quickly ran to the clinic and got inside. Trent jumped slightly as he saw her walk in soaking wet. She had an exasperated expression. Trent gave her a smile as she gave him a sharp glare as she walked up the stairs to her room. She let out a low groan as she plopped in her bed and quickly fell asleep.
