Chapter Eight: Come Back/ Fall 11th

Elli quietly walked down the street as the leaves around gently fell to the ground. It had been nearly 3 weeks since anyone had seen or heard of Adam. Things were now awkward between her and Trent. Elli’s heart felt heavy as she continued to take steps to the place she used to visit so frequently, Adam’s Ranch. She looked around. Nothing seemed to have changed, however, it was a lot quieter. The cows and sheep weren’t outside grazing and the chickens weren’t pecking at the dirt for their meal. She turned her head to the right, now looking at Adam’s home. She thought of how much fun she would have with him while eating lunch in there and eating half burned cookies. The door then opened as Elli’s heart skipped a beat. “Adam?!”

Elli began to run to the front of the house to see Adam’s smiling face, but instead, there was Cliff. “Cliff…?” Cliff blushed as he looked down at the ground. “What are you doing here?” Cliff looked up as his face was a light pink. “Adam hired me last minute to watch his ranch. He seemed in a hurry, but I haven’t seen him since summer.” Elli looked at the ground. “Oh… I see… Thank you for the information.” She turned and walked away from the ranch. Why did he go? Did he really like her that much? Why was he acting like a child?! Her head began to become light as she asked herself all these questions that she didn’t know how to answer.

She soon reached the clinic and sat down in her desk. She remembered at how she used to be so excited each day just to chat or do something with the doctor, now she was too afraid to view him in the face. That day, his eyes were so cold and terrifying. The atmosphere was heavy with it being quiet and seemed things had gone back to normal however, Elli missed how Adam would come bursting in through the door just to deliver herbs and chat with Elli. Elli shook her head as she stood up and organized the prescriptions in alphabetical order by their first name. She had to get Adam out of her head, or she would end up developing heart sickness. But wait… why would she? Ever since Adam had left, Elli kept asking herself so many questions, she would pass out from over thinking.

Another three days went by, and Elli found herself now walking to Adam’s ranch, just find out he wasn’t there. After she had gone to the ranch, she would go back to the clinic, work until four, and then walk home to her grandmother’s. She felt so withdrawn. She didn’t talk to her friends anymore and her family began to worry about her health. She woke up one morning and felt that something was going to be different, but logic clearly pushed it away. Elli walked into the clinic and switched the sign from ‘closed’ to ‘open’ as she went back to her desk and sat there, beginning to write down on the paper. She dozed off as she continued to work. “Adam… Where did you go?” She sighed as she looked at her paper. She blushed as she realized she had written Adam all over it. She crumpled it and threw it away in the garbage bin. She sighed as she stared out the window. “Elli?” She turned her head to face the doctor. “O-Oh! Doctor!” She bowed her head slightly. He then lifted her head as she blushed. “Elli… I’m worried about your health.” Elli turned her head as she stood and tried to get away, but before she could, Trent grabbed her hand and turned her to face him. “Elli! Please listen to me! I understand I was wrong, but please… Your making me worry…” Trent began to cry as he pulled Elli into an embrace. Elli had never seen the doctor cry, for he always appeared strong in front of the patients so they wouldn’t have any worries. “Elli.” Trent then stood up straight and faced Elli. “I know you may not notice this, or you’re too stubborn to admit this to yourself, but I think you’re in love with Adam.”

Elli’s face turned red as she felt her knee’s lightly shake. “Me… In love with Adam? Are you joking Doctor?” Even though she sounded somewhat confident outside, her heart was racing while it’s almost like the doctor could read her as clearly as a book. The doctor shook her slightly as he practically yelled at her. “Elli! Are you blind?! You haven’t stopped grieving since Adam left! It’s because I love you Elli that I’m getting so worried!!” Something then snapped inside of Elli, as if two and two had finally come together at last. “Am I in love with Adam?” Her heart began to race as she asked herself the question. She then looked at the doctor directly in the eyes, for probably the first time in her life. “I’m sorry for making you worry doctor.” Trent then embraced Elli, as Elli meekly hugged him back.

The rest of the day just seemed to blunder together and before she realized it, the sun was setting outside as she lay in her bed. Elli gripped her pillow tightly as she sat up. She headed out of the clinic and walked down the way she went to Adam’s. Something was pulling her there, almost as if it was magnetic. Her heart was racing as she soon stood outside of Adam’s home. She gulped as she reached for the handle. She felt so nervous. Her heart was racing while her palms began to sweat. She lightly twisted the handle as she could hear a faint click. She pushed the door open as she stood in the door way. The lights were out, so it must’ve meant Cliff was gone. She then remembered Adam didn’t lock his door. “Idiot…” She closed the door behind her as she examined the house.

She hadn’t been here in forever it seemed, yet nothing really changed. She noticed where Adam’s room was. Her heart began to race as walked slowly towards the door. She felt nervous again as she slowly opened the door. It was very dark and quiet inside, no wonder Adam kept the door closed. She felt around with her hand and found a lamp on an end table. She turned the knob on the lamp as it lit up the room. It wasn’t that fancy. A large bed was in the middle towards the wall with two end tables on each side of the bed and a dresser at the other side of the room to the left. Elli took off her shoes and laid in the bed. It was very comfy. She then began to cry as she rested her head on his pillow. “Adam… Why did you leave me? Do you not like me as much as you said that day…? Did you lie to me?” Elli began to feel tired as she still continued to cry. Soon, she was fast asleep on Adam’s bed.

Elli woke up to a loud thump in the house. She looked around the room and tried to turn on the light, but the power was out. “Crap…” She grabbed the pillow as she heard footsteps outside the room. Her heart began to race as they stopped right outside of the room. Out of the darkness she saw the door handle turn. She held her breath as the door opened and lifted the pillow above her head. The light then began to blink as the power began to come back on. Elli almost fell backwards as she was face to face with Adam.

“Adam?! What are you doing here?!” Adam looked dumbfounded then pointed a finger at her. “I might as well ask you the same question.” Eli then dropped the pillow as she remembered she was at Adam’s home. She soon felt something warm run down her cheeks. She tried to wipe it away but she couldn’t stop them from falling. Adam’s face began to look worried as Elli covered her face and cried. Adam put his hand on her shoulder as she continued to cry. “Elli? What’s wrong?” “YOU IDIOT!” Adam fell over as Elli shook with anger. “You just left without telling me anything!! I was so worried!!” She then hunched over as she held herself and continued to cry. Adam then stood up and embraced her into his arms. “I’m sorry.” Elli wrapped her arms around him as she cried harder. She had missed his face. His voice. Almost everything about him, she had missed, even his goofy smile.

Adam then moved the hair from Elli’s face as he kissed her. She missed the warmth of his lips. His body was so warm to hers. This was a night that she never wanted to forget. She remembered telling Adam how much she missed him as he kept telling her “Shh…” She remembered how Adam held her close and she was reassured that he wouldn’t leave her ever again. But the logic in the back of her head kept asking her why was she letting him do this? She knew the answer almost as soon as she asked it, it was because she loved him and she wasn’t going to be stupid and let him go ever again. “I love you Adam.”

Elli woke up the next morning with her clothes spread all over the floor as she clutched to the blanket she was under. She looked to her left to see Adam, but he was already gone. She was going to get ready to yell at him, but then the door slammed open with Adam holding her breakfast on a tray. He was already all dressed and made breakfast. “Good morning lovely!” Elli blushed bright red as she remembered what happened the night before. Adam walked up to her and set the tray on the bed as he kissed her cheek. He then sat at the edge of the bed as Elli ate breakfast. When she was done, Adam walked over and picked up the tray with one hand. Elli grabbed the other one before he could go. “Adam…?” Adam turned and faced her. “Yes?” Elli heart raced as she blurted out a silly question. “Would you like to be my boyfriend?” She blushed as she covered her mouth. Adam just smiled and set the tray on the end table as he got close to her face and kissed her softly. “Of course.” Elli’s heart skipped a beat as she wrapped her arms around his neck. She then felt something on her breast. “Adam…” She hit Adam in the head as he laughed and walked out with the tray.
