Review Log
This will contain mostly reviews. I will keep spoilers to a minimum where possible, but I can't guarantee spoiler free.
Tonight's Being Human blew me away. All that lovely acting, all that spiraling out of control escalation. I'm itching for next week's episode, yet bummed it's the finale. Are they doing a third series, does anyone know? Tonight's episode confirmed my theory about vampires in their mythology, which pleases me. I've noticed how young their older vampires are. I mean, Ivan was considered ancient at 237, right? And Mitchell old at a hundred and whatever. I looked at their vampires. most of them are completely bat s**t non-functional crazy. They are mostly homeless, living under bridges and in sewers because they are too non-functional to hold jobs. Mitchell picked the guy to front the funeral parlor based on him still owning a suit and being able to hold it together enough to deal with the public. We have only seen three functional vampires: Mitchell, Ivan, Herrik, and the gay vampire who's name escapes me. Herrick was a dangerous sociopath with megalomania. He was able to function in a job, but he wasn't sane. Ivan suffered from depression, which was less crippling than what most of them are dealing with, but it's implied that the only thing keeping him going is his connection to Daisy and maybe Mitchell. It's been repeatedly implied that he'd likely be dead if he hadn't made Daisy. Mitchell, up until very recently was stable. he's also been on the wagon for forty years. His gay friend was also stable and had been on the wagon more than forty years before he slipped. The two most stable vampires are the ones who have been not drinking blood. The two next most functional have mental illnesses that let them keep passing as as human even though they have grievous consequences. Everyone else feeds at will and is non-functional. I think the blood drinking makes them crazy. I thinbk Ivan was just lucky to have a predisposition towards depression, which meant he edged towards lethargy instead of psychosis. I'm betting Herrick had sociopathic tendencies the blood magnified, and the need for sociopaths to pass as human meant he just kept passing when he became a top predator. I think the vampires don't generally live to be old because escalating mental illness means that either they need to be put down for being to dangerous, like that one woman this season, or that eventually, the mental illness renders them incapable of continuing. I'm betting given time, Ivan would have succumbed fatally to that depression. 237 is old because even vampires need to be sane enough to keep covering kills, and I'm betting there's a high suicide rate for vampires of a certain age. Mitchell's loss of control is too extreme even as a response to grief and betrayal. He's drinking blood again, now in huge quantities and he's rabid dog out of control now. I don't thing it's coincidence that he and daisy are both free feeding and this messed up. As a side note, I think it's cool that this show is the rare one with more male nudity and partial nudity than female nudity. I mean, how many shows do that? It's refreshing.
