I'm not going to screencap the scavenging pages because that would be teidious and boring, so I'll just transcribe what they say and explain my reasoning for my decisions.
You can travel for 4 hours on a tank of gas. I recommend at least 24 tanks of gas. you can grab 8 tanks an hour.
It then asks how many hours I want to spend scavenging. I'll do what the watch-seller guy advises and scavenge 3 hours.
I'm not going to scavenge for Food. I will explain why once we start travelling.
You'll need medical supplies to treat injuries on the road. Med kits will automatically be used when yo uare sick. I recommend taking at least 2 med kits per person. It takes an hour to grab 5 med kits.
I will spend an hour to grab 5 med kits. Because I like to live dangerously. cool
You can find ammunition in boxes of 20 bullets. You can grab 10 boxes in an hour.
Now you're talking! I gonna need plenty of bullets soon, so I'll spend 3 hours geting these.
It's a good idea to have a few spare parts for your station wagon. Here's what you can get. 2spare tires - 1 hr; 2 batteries - 1 hr; 2 mufflers - 1 hr
Since having your car break down is automatic game over, I'm going to try to have at least 2 spares at all times. But to be safe, I spend 6 hours total looking for spare parts.
The dead have no use for money anymore. I'd guess you could find about 50 dollars if you spent an hour rummaging through wallets and purses.
The most important rule in all RPGs is 'Always loot the bodies.' Also, while you could theoretically complete the game without it, money is very useful and this is the only time when you can scavenge for it. After this, the only way to earn cash is to trade for it, and post-apocolyptic people are tightwads. (oh sure, they'll trade you a $50 med kit for a $15 tank of gas, but will onlly part with $8 for $20 worth of food. rolleyes )
I will spend the remainder of my time searching for money.
