Last night I watched a movie about Audie Murphy (starring Audie Murphy as himself). In 1942, at 17, he joined the Army. In the next few years he became a Platoon Leader. After his best friend was killed by German fire, he single handedly took out several German machine gun crews. The injury that lead to the end of his battlefield career was the result of standing on top of a burning tank and firing it's machine gun, killing many German soldiers. Shortly after his 19th birthday he was awarded the Legion of Merit and the highest honor of the U.S. Military, the Medal of Honor. With 33 American medals, 5 French medals and 1 Belgium medal, he was the most decorated soldier of WWII. He died in 1971 in a plane crash at the age of 46.
