The whole debate over the funding of the Mapplethorpe exhibition was huge when I was a teen. (It's on my mind what with history repeating itself over Fire in My Belly). It occurred to me that I've never even seen the art in question. (I'm suspecting a lot of the outraged folks on the other side back then hadn't seen them either). So I googled it. As i looked at page after page of his photos, I thought of all the effort put into stopping people seeing them once upon a time.
