The Case Files of Joe Delahoy, Private Investigator
A man, his gun, and a pack of cigarettes. A Gaian with a film noir obsession, this Private Eye starts solving crimes the Regulators won't even touch.
New Case: Holiday Hustle
Sarah had been trying to find some dirt on Catrina Deltorres for weeks now, but she was coming up with nothing. It was driving her up a wall for two reasons: 1) She hated Catrina with a hatred unknown to most. Every time she came around, she was always around Delahoy, making those sultry comments about him and whatnot. And 2) Delahoy wasn't stressing over the case whatsoever. It had been months since he's even looked at this case again, and now it seemed like he would quit on it. That'd make two cases that he's failed to solve.

That afternoon, Detective Delahoy emerged from his office/apartment dressed rather...different. For one thing, he wasn't wearing a white shirt and tie. Instead, there was this festive red sweater. And then there was his face; he had actually shaved all the way for once. Clean shaven, dressed like he wasn't a cold man, and-ugh- a happy smile on his face, Delahoy nodded at Sarah, and poured himself some coffee. "How's it going, Ms. Fontaine?" he asked. Sarah was a little confused, but she nodded and replied. “Uh, yeah, I’m doing fine, Mr. Delahoy.” The detective nodded, and took a sip from his cup. That’s some good coffee,” he said softly.

Sarah sighed, getting slightly annoyed. “So, why are you dressed so festive for? You going to a dance lesson with that Catrina woman?” There was obvious disgust in that question, but Delahoy didn’t pay it any mind. “Sorry, but my lady isn’t coming over today,” he said. “No, there’s another woman in my life, and I’m looking forward to seeing her.” Sarah groaned.

“Who is this mystery woman?” She barked. “I mean, first there’s that dumb vamp Catrina, and now there someone else? Well, who is it, Joe? Who could it possibly be?”

Delahoy stared at Sarah for a moment before shaking his head. “I don’t know what your major malfunction is, Ms. Fontaine. You might want to take a few days off. It is the holidays, after all.” He took a sip from his cup as Sarah glared at him with jealous eyes. “Seriously, Sarah, will you cut this whole ‘lovey dovey’ bunk out? I’m a grown man, for Christ sake; if I want to be romantically involved with someone, I don’t see why I should have to get pestered by some young, bird-brained-“

He turned his head and stopped speaking as the office door opened up with a loud creaking noise. A young girl, maybe twelve or thirteen with plain black hair walked in. She was wearing a small black trench coat, a St. Baldur’s middle school uniform underneath. She had a bright, purple backpack on as well; if it wasn’t for that, you might not know she was a girl from first glance. Sarah had never seen the girl before, but she knew exactly who she was when she saw the girl’s face. She had this small frown, and bored-looking brown eyes, a lot like her major crush: Detective Delahoy.

The detective looked down at the girl, and held his arms out. “Hey there, sweetheart,” he said softly. It was very unbecoming of him; anyone who had heard him speak knew he wasn’t a soft-sounding person. The girl smiled then, and ran right into Delahoy’s arms. “Nice to see you again, Pop,” she said with a voice a lot like Delahoys (it was still feminine, but it had that annoyed and calculating sound to it that we’ve grown to know and love).

Sarah was flabbergasted, to say the least. “Uh….that’s….your daughter?” Delahoy looked up at his secretary, and nodded. “This is my kid, Samantha. Sam, this is Sarah Fontaine. “ The girl nodded, and held out her hand. “Nice to meet you,” she said with a smile. “So you’re the ‘annoying canary’ that Pop told me about on the phone. You don’t seem to annoying to me.” Sarah smiled, embarrassed. “ Oh, kids,” she said with a small laugh. “Always making up things.” Samantha puffed out her cheeks with a frown. “I’m not some kid, you fink,” she said with a tough tone. “And a good gumshoe never lies, right, Pop?” Delahoy laughed, and patted Sam’s head. “That’s my girl, always sticking to her guns, eh?”

Sarah sighed, and stood up. “Well, I think I’m going to go visit my mother for awhile. You two stay out of trouble, okay?” Delahoy and Sam nodded, giving Sarah almost the exact same face. It was really creepy, how in tune they seemed to be. “Well…uh, bye.” Sarah left then, letting out another sigh once she was outside. “I got pushed aside again, and this time by a little kid!”

Meanwhile, Delahoy helped Sam with her coat, and said, “So, what’s the plan for this week, kiddo? Want to go to the museum, or maybe catch a flick?” Sam shook her head, looking serious. “Not yet, Pop. I need your help with a very important case.” Delahoy smiled, surprised. “Oh really? What do got? Missing toys, you suspect your little boyfriend of cheating on you?” Sam laughed a little, but shook her head again. “No, Pop. My friend Eliza’s missing. She’s been missing for over a month now.” Delahoy looked at his daughter carefully, and knew she was sincerely worried. “Alright then,” he said softly. “I’ll take the case, sweetheart. Let’s get some background info ready, okay?” Sam nodded, and rummaged through her backpack for her laptop. “Let’s get to business.”
