Blood flows like a river down my arm...
A Memory
"I feel as though my life has failed, I live and love then get Impaled... Will all this bitter nonsense end? Before or after my heartbreaks mend? It seems as though this pain repeats, over and over as each heart beats. I find her, lose her, lose my mind... In the end, true love I'll find? The riddles reek of my defeat! I shall not lose..., not this time! Stop pulling strings, THIS LIFE IS MINE!!"

"Vlady... What do you mean? Why are you speaking in riddles again? It doesn't make any sense!"

"I don't know... It keeps running through my head and I can't figure it out."

"I don't like it. I don't want to lose you! You're my best friend...my only friend..."
A tear of blood fell from the young girl's right eye.

"Don't cry. I'll protect you, no matter what. You won't lose me."
The boy knelt down and wiped the blood drop from her cheek. With a smile, he hugged her.

"Vlady..."
The young girl giggled and returned the hug.

"Come now, we must return you to Damian. I want not punished for you being out."
He placed his hand on the girl's shoulder and stood.

"You're very right. I, too, want not be punished."
She walked with the boy back to the stairs leading inside.

Awaiting their return, Damian and a hooded fellow with folded wings stood on the balcony to the left of the stairs leading to the courtyard. The hooded one had their back to the stairs, facing out into the distance from under their hood. As the two children came closer to the bottom step Damian raised his hand, as a sign to stop. The young girl continued up the stairs while her friend stood silently on the ground.

"Hayleth, dear, continue to your chamber. Dinner has been placed on your desk, I shall be in to speak with you after I deal with matters out here."
Damian ruffled the bright golden hair on the girl's head. She nodded and continued inside.

"I do hope Vlady doesn't get in too much trouble."
Hayleth ran through the corridor leading to her chamber. As she reached the door she felt a shiver of uncertainty. She froze. Listening carefully, she overheard the conversation occurring outside between her Uncle and friend. What little she could understand, she didn't like.

---------

...Something or other in Kaishyn... Most likely spoken by the hooded one.

"What!! This cannot be!"
She could hear the upset in Vladimir's voice.

"Vladimir, there is nothing at this moment you can do to change this."

"I don't care if there's nothing I can do! I'll do it anyway!! Damian, this cannot happen! I may only be a Kaishun, but that doesn't mean I will grow up to be just like the rest of them!"
The next bit he spoke was in Kaishyn.

The hooded one yelled? back at him in Kaishyn.

---------

Hayleth shivered in fear. She only knew a small fraction of what was said, but it didn't sound good. She threw open the door to her chamber and carefully closed it behind herself. She knew something was up, something not good. She ignored the food her Uncle had laid out for her and threw it on the floor. She paced back and forth for a moment before yanking her bottom desk drawer open. Shifting through old parchment, she quickly found her amulet at the back of the drawer. She put it on and tucked it under her shirt. She pushed the drawer closed and paced back to bed. As she sat down, the sound of footsteps echoed outside her door.

"Enough."
Her Uncle sounded displeased...

"I shall leave as soon as I speak with her! Not before!"
It was Vladimir.

"You have but a few moments, then you are to leave. I do not wish to remove you forcefully, Vladimir."

"Thank you."
He knocked upon the door as he always did.

Hayleth jumped up and opened the door for him. Once he was inside she quickly closed the door again.

"Vlady...you can't leave..."
She whispered.

"I have to. And I only have a moment to tell you goodbye."

"NO! I won't let you!!"
She screamed.

Damian pushed the door open and stood in the doorway.
"Vladimir. It is time you go."

Vladimir sighed and turned toward the door.
"I'm sorry."

"NO!!"

Damian muttered something under his breath. Hayleth stopped moving and fell asleep, landing softly on her bed.
