Chapter 5: The cop, the drunk, and the obsessed

When they got home they saw a big moving van in front of the house with a big sign reading “MUV-UR-STUFF” on the side. “Well its about time it got here,” Kris said as they got out of the car. “Did they bring Sammy,” he asked, in which his little black and brown dog came up to him, wagging his tail and jumping onto Kris’s leg, desperately trying to lick his face, “well, that answers my question,” Kris said, picking up the dog and allowing him to lick his face.
“Here, give him to Jay and help get the beds inside, I’ll get some boxes,” said his mother, walking to the moving van as Jay grabbed Sammy and took him inside.
As he grabbed the first bed he heard the dark, familiar voice of his next door neighbor. “Well, does the big, strong man need some help,” she said in a sarcastic, babyish voice.
“Hey Jennifer,” Kris yelled out, turning to the black haired goth, “don’t you have an occult meeting to go to, or some demon to praise to?”
“I’m not that gothic,” she said sneering back at him, “besides, I was just giving you a compliment that Jessica was annoying me with all night after you left. She’s really into you, you know,” and with that said she turned towards her door and left Kris with blushed cheeks and leaving him in a good mood for the rest of the evening, until his phone rang that is.
“Kris,” said the desperate voice of Hannah, “Kris, he’s here, you have to help me, he’s at the house, I don’t know what to do, I don’t—“
“Whoa, whoa, slow down Hannah,” Kris said, confused and worried, “Who’s there?”
“Carlos,” she said in a hysterical voice, “he’s here, he’s banging on the door, I don’t know what to do—“
“Ok, um, I’ll be there in a minute, just call the police, lock the doors and stay away from the windows, ok,” he said as he looked for his jacket and his pocket knife that his grandfather had given him on his thirteenth birthday.
“Ok,” he heard her say as she hung up the phone, slightly calming down, relieved by the fact that someone was coming for her.
“I’ll be back mom,” Kris said, opening the door and walking into the dark night air, “I’m going to go help my friend with something real quick, ok?”
“Ok,” she yelled back, “just be careful and hurry up, we still have stuff to do, ok?”
“Ok, and no Jay, you can’t come with me,” he said as Jay came up to the door with his jacket on.
“Aww,” he said in a disappointed voice and frowning slightly, “why not?”
“Because, I said so,” Kris said, stepping outside into the cool night air, “I’ll be right back, and you still need to help mom out.”
“Jay,” said their mother, “what did I tell you this morning?”
“That I can’t go outside until I put all of my stuff away,” he said sadly, walking as slowly as he could towards the stairs.
“Oh, here,” his mother called to Kris as he was closing the door, “I want you to go to the store and get some dinner stuff, maybe some sandwich supplies or something, ok?”
“Mom, do I have to?” he said in a disappointed voice, keeping his complete concentration on Hannah.
“Do you want dinner tonight or not,” she asked, laughing at the stupid question.
“Fine,” he said, surrendering the argument in an attempt to get to Hannah faster and taking the money from his mom. “I’ll be back soon, ok?”
As Kris ran down the stairs he wondered how much time he had before Carlos got inside, or if Hannah breaks down and tries to get out.
As Kris turned the alleyway he ran into a tall boy who, according to his breath, was drunk. “Hey kid, watch it,” he said, pushing Kris down to the ground.
“Look, I’m not lookin’ for trouble, ok,” Kris said, getting up and trying to pass him, but getting grabbed by the collar.
“Too bad,” he said, landing a blow to Kris’s shoulder.
“Don’t you know,” Kris said, rubbing his shoulder from the blow, “that drinking blurs your vision and that, while drinking doesn’t kill you,” throwing a punch of his own to the drunk’s stomach, sending him to the ground “the people that you mess with while being drunk will?”
As the drunk sat there, gasping for breath from being winded, Kris ran down the alleyway, running as fast as he could to Hannah’s house, but a little slower than before, still feeling sore from his shoulder.
As he got to the corner of the Hannah’s street, he heard banging and shouting from near by, figuring it was Carlos, making Kris feel relieved that he hadn’t gotten in yet.
As he stepped toward the house, he yelled out, “hey Carlos, don’t you remember what I told you last time you were harassing Hannah?”
As Kris said this, Carlos turned around in surprise, but smiling at the same time, “so, you managed to get past my flunky, huh?”
“Flunky?” Kris asked, confused, but then said, “You mean that drunk in the alley? Ha, that’s just pathetic,” Kris said, smiling widely.
“Can’t get good service these days, huh? Well, when you want something done,” at this Carlos pulled out a fold-in dagger from his jacket pocket, showing it to Kris, making him reach into his pocket, enclosing his hand on his own, “you gotta do it yourself.”
“You think you scare me with that little butter knife of yours,” he said, feeling his legs shaking under him, thinking to himself because it does, I’ve never been this far in trouble before.
“It should, cause if you don’t get out of here,” he slid the knife gently across his neck and smiling with a wicked grin.
“We’ll see about that,” Kris said as he heard a small wail of a siren, and blue and red lights reflecting on the buildings, “it seems that I’m not the one in trouble here,” he said as the police car stopped in front of the apartments, forcing Carlos to hide his knife away.
“Problem officer,” asked Carlos, pretending that the whole sudden ordeal hadn’t just happened.
“Yes Carlos,” said the elderly looking officer in a deep, bored voice, “what have I, the judge, half the police force, and your own mother told you about coming within thirty yards of Hannah?”
“You two know each other,” said Kris in a laughable yet surprised voice, “my god, you are obsessed with her.”
“I prefer the term ‘passionate’, ok,” Carlos snapped back with a look of disgust.
“Whichever way you want to put it, your still violating the restraining order and you know what I’m about to tell you,” said the officer, reaching his hand out, grabbing Carlos’s arm gently and pulling him to the car.
“I know, I know, you have to take me home with a warning not to come close here again,” he said, pulling his arm out of his grip, “you should know that I go quietly by now.”
“You need to clear out too,” said the cop, looking back at Kris, holding the door open for Carlos to get in, “these streets ain’t exactly the safest place at this time of night.”
“Alright, I’m gone,” said Kris, “oh, and be careful not to stab anyone with that knife Carlos, don’t want any ‘accidents’, right?”
“Knife!? You mean you were going to hurt her,” yelled the police officer as Kris turned around and walked up the stairs to Hannah’s house with a smile and a sigh or relief.
