Kaida was humming. It was a happy tune, with a nice beat to it matched by the movement of her hands tossing two little catkin-filled bags up and catching them. And then she started 'juggling' them, words replacing the humming. “Dìchi, dìni, dìsa, dìyo, dìwu...” And then there was another with her, and she was tossing the bags back and forth with them, their voices chiming together.
“Dìliku, dìqīchi, dìbāchi, dìjiyuu, dìshíuu!” There was a garble of words that came out of their mouths that she didn't quite catch, but her dream-self did. “Shíuudìchi, shíuudìni, shíuudìsa, shíuudìy-” One of the bags dropped to the ground, and she felt herself pouting. She'd been having fun! The laugh from the other wasn't the high-pitched laugh of a child, but that of an adult. And she was gathered up into the arms of the woman, someone she felt was as familiar to her, maybe even more so, as the back of her hand. She struggled a little, a smile and giggle trying to defeat her pout.
“Mǔkaa! Nǐta shixīng chiǎo jitose! Èyuun!” The woman smiled at her, willow leaf-green eyes filled with the light from the smile.
“Nǚmusu, fùkeru.” Something about the woman's voice presence calmed her, a smile creeping onto her lips as she giggled.
“Bùe èyuun. Mǔkaa àkideru!” She grabbed a lock of the woman's white hair gently, reveling in the silky feel of it as a bark-brown hand smoothed the hair on the top of her head.
“Nǚmusu àkideru.” There was another voice, a male one this time that sounded adult. The woman turned towards the voice, Kaida still in her arms. And there was no mistaking the love in the woman's eyes, a love that made Kaida's smile grow as she let go of the woman's hair, reaching for the man that was approaching.
“Fùtou!” The man chuckled and took her from the woman's arms, kissing her forehead. Kaida snuggled into him, making happy little noises. “Fùtou àkideru!” The man kissed the top of her head, smiling widely.
“Àkideru.” And then he placed her on her feet. “Nǐta deno hǎomoda dàchade.” The girl made a sound that could only be described as a squee, beelining for the direction the man nodded in and leaving the soft voices of the adults behind her.
And suddenly, she was staring at her babbling baby brother, being held by her younger sister. Kaida blinked at Kimi and Raphael a moment, attempting to regain her bearings, before the unamused middle-schooler raised a brow.
“Mama and Dad told me to come wake you up. I was about to have Raph drool on you since you weren't answering me.” Kaida giggled a bit and nodded.
“Right. I'll be right down. Thanks for the attempted wake-up call.” Kimi nodded and put Raphael on the bed with Kaida before practically flouncing out. The teenager sighed and looked to her burbling brother, picking him up after sitting up. “I just had the strangest dream, Raph. I think. Maybe not. Can't remember much, aside from the fact it was happy. And whoever was in it was less understandable than you.” Her only answer was a gurgle and baby-giggle that made her smile. “You're lucky. All you have to worry about is making sure you don't run into anything, that there's food in your belly, and your diaper is changed.” And she hefted him up to go join her family downstairs for breakfast. At least she'd had a nice dream, instead of a nightmare. A nice dream she couldn't really remember was far preferable over a nightmare she remembered too vividly.
