Story for Your Consideration by sutoyou 09/18/2006
Never say Nevah!
Joedee Lynn Markum ran the little convenience store down on the corner of Terwiliger and 2nd Street. She had never met a stranger that she didn't like. She was the talkingest woman in twenty counties, as far as Carlos could see. "What's up, Joedee?" he called as he pushed open the door and heard the familiar warning buzz.
"Whatcha mean, what's up, Carlos?" Joedee hollered back, laughing. "Nothin's up! You know that there hasn't been a man in my bed since 1989--and I'm gonna keep it that ways!" Joedy was packing up her purse to leave, her shoulders shaking as she laughed, hard enough to cry.
Carlos wandered toward the cash register and patted her on the back, "Hey, girlfriend," he grinned. "It wasn't that funny." Her sense of humor didn't usually run to sexual innuendo, so naturally he was curious about her day. "What've you been doing that has you so tickled."
Joedee just looked over at him and answered, winking at him, "I had a visitor today."
Carlos said, "Who was it--your ex?" He opened the register and started to count out the cash. He was taking over and she was going home in a few minutes, so he might as well get a head start--while he talked.
"No it wasn't anyone I already knew, It was a stranger. She was a little bit different than we're used to around here. Let me just tell you, she wasn't a native." She started giggling, again.
"I haven't seen any strange cars or trucks in town. What was she driving?" Carlos continued counting change and making notes about the registers' contents while he talked. Carlos liked cars, he hoped the visitor was staying in town and then he would get a peek at her car.
"Oh, she didn't exactly drive into town...she sort of...uh..walked, she was pretty interesting!" Joedee reached over the register and touched the alarm button under the counter.
"Hey, what do you think you're doing? That is going to get us in a lot of trouble!" He looked up and noticed that she was really very close to his face now. Staring into her eyes, he noticed that they weren't the old looking, faded blue. These eyes seemed to stare right through him as Joedee replied, "Why, sugar, I am doing you a favor--calling for help." Her face seemed to shift and move, as he watched. She smiled and he noticed her teeth. They were sure sharp looking. The two canines seemed to be growing as she grinned. "You look good enough to eat."
Carlos tried to back away from the face he thought he knew, so well. But he backed into someone. He thought it was someone, but he could swear that he felt fur against his neck between the collar and his longish hair. "Joedee, come on and back off! You're freaking me out. You are never going to get away with hurting me. Everyone in town knows you. So just back off." He felt two hairy arms reach around him and clamp his arms to his chest. Carlos started struggling, but the arms held strong.
"Oh, Carlos, I really did want to get out before you got here. But I guess, it wasn't meant to be." The thing holding him began to giggle and then Joedee giggled, too. "Honey, never say Nevah!"
A warm tongue swiped across his cheek, causing him to shiver. " You don't never want to do this, I know you don't." The tongue licked against the side of his mouth, but this time he could feel the tiniest touch of teeth. His skin started crawling and his knees went limp. The arms around him tightened and held him upright.
"Never do this." he started crying. "Please Joedee--You know you'd never hurt anyone!" His voice was shaky and as the teeth grazed his neck, he looked in her eyes, pleading and unable to move.
Then a gravely voice whispered in his ear, "Never say Nevah, honey. Cause Nevah's in town...and ready for supper!"
