Uhuru yall! It's 'Aziz from the tribe of Kislev. I wanted to speak on a serious subject today since I said I would before. I want to talk about BET [Black Entertainment Television] and it's negative (and positive [mostly negative]) effects on the Black Community and the mentality of most who watch this channel.
BET. A conduit used by some colonized Africans (A people that most would call, African Americans) to escpae the harsh realities of today. A conscience effort may not always be used to help soothe the pains of today but for most BET is a tool for just that. But, my question is this: Has BET gone from a simple coping mechanism to a destructive leech?
Have you ever watched and old clip of BET? When I say old I mean...Hmn...Well, maybe even as recent as '98. Around the time when Onyx was at it's pinnacle with the underground world and the commercial world. A time where Kelis sung about relationship issues instead of being a sex symbol. Back when Outkast rapped to the beat of Player's Ball and everything seemed so serene. I think back then BET really was used to calm our nerves from our troubled lives. Of course there were a few suggestive themes salted into the grand scheme of things but that's what made it BET. There our times when we must laugh. Times when we must cry. Times when we just have to step back and gather ourselves to prepare for the road ahead of us. But these, "suggestive themes" as they've been labeled where most of the time used to teach a lesson or to tell a story that helps.
Now? In the year 2006? BET is no longer that. It's no longer beneficial to our lives. In fact, BET is PLAUGING us instead of aiding us. The images depicted on BET are perpetuating evil and the mentality that we are inferior people. BET and the ignorance portayed by it is part of the reason the Black Community is in such a "slump".
Aiyo, I'ma continue this later. I know yall tired of reading for right now. Take a break. But I have an assignment. Watch BET for a little while and see all the negative s**t that goes on. Keep this journal entry in mind though. See ya next time.
UHURU!
