Meredith was born to a poor farming family that lived a little outside of the small English town Alexander and Annaliese called home. The Covingtons were a merchant family - not the richest in the city, but not the poorest either, not by far. Meredith's mother worked for them to help make ends meet, at first in the store and then as a housekeeper/maid. Meredith often went with her to help, and ended up growing up alongside the Covington children, almost as one of their own. She was closest in age to Annaliese and Alexander, and soon Anna and Meredith became fast friends - though she always knew she could never be as close to the girl as her brother.
As they grew from children into women, however, they grew closer, sharing everything that best friends could. Meredith was often teased for her crushes, falling in and out of love at the drop of a hat -- but the only time the teasing didn't produce an embarassed blush was when one of the neighborhood boys mocked her relationship with Annaliese, hinting at something that was (at the time) unmentionable. Meredith practically flew at the boy, beating him with her tiny fists mercilessly - frightening to see the quiet, shy little thing so enraged. She bloodied his nose and very nearly broke his jaw before someone pulled her off -- and when questioned she simply said he'd gotten it all wrong, a 'silly little crush' couldn't touch Anna. She was 'beyond' that - whatever that meant. No one made fun of them again.
But their friendship was sorely tested when Anna fell for Victor, spending all her time with him and leaving Meredith alone in her jealousy and lonliness. She tried to tag along, but oftentimes felt even more alone within their group - and something about Victor scared her. However, when Anna left for London, she tagged along as well, for reasons that were never apparent. She claimed she was besotten with the enigmatic man -- a lie that later became truth. She became something like Victor's pet - a lackey, nothing more, nothing less, turned with barely a thought. A reason to keep Anna with him, in her vow to protect her best friend. By that time, Meredith was completely his. Or perhaps she was trying to get back at the one person she wanted to love her most.
She supposedly died when the s**t hit the fan, her last act one of betrayal (indirectly the cause of Via's broken sight). But Via still swears she sometimes sees her -- and once, thought a girl called her name with a voice that she would recognize until the day she 'died'. But if she is alive, she has not come forward. Does she still hate Via for her imagined betrayal? Would their reunion be one of joy - or sorrow? Only time will tell...
