Beware of the fangirl...The diary of a Gaian.
This is the diary of Dawna Celeste, just another ordinary Gaian...or is she?
Not again...please, not again.
I sleepwalked last night. Yes, I guess it was last night by now... What am I going to do? What am I going to do? If I turn into a monster again here...no, I don't even want to think of it!
Yesterday was a nice enough day. I went to town to do some minor computer repairs at the station, shopped a bit, watched disbelivingly how recklessly people were driving the new flying saucers that are everywhere, and got quite upset at how many aliens were strutting around like this was their planet, and talking like it too. They wern't all people who'd drunk Zurg either...
Enough of that! When we got home, I went for a stroll in the garden. I was just about to go back inside when a large flying saucer flew over...and stopped just above me. Suddenly I was standing in a cone of golden light, unable to move. I was just starting to get really worried when the light went off and the thing zoomed away. I ran inside, and had to spend the next ten minutes trying to calm down Cindy, who had seen the whole thing.
We ate curry for dinner, washed the dishes, and settled down to watch the news while Cindy did her nails. There was a rerun of her interview with Ron Bruise and the aliens...it must have been for the hundredth time! When it got to the bit where she was arguing with Bruise about energy drinks, I caught something I'd been too busy to notice before.
"Who's this cousin of yours?" I asked.
"Who?" she asked, trying to pretend she wasn't watching herself criticly.
"The one who drank lots of Red Bino!" I said. "You never told me you had any cousins..."
"Oh, him?" She laughed. "He's just one of those little figments that fit nicely into interviews. I wonder who he'll be next time..."
"So you were lying! I thought reporters had to be honest!" I looked sourly at her.
She shrugged. "Not so much lying, as being..."
"Glib," I finished for her. "So you were being glib! Bruise was right!"
"And is it a crime to be glib?" she asked, reaching for the bottle of red nail polish. "Except in the mind of the Bruise, that is?"
"I guess not..." I yawned. "Time for bed... Enjoy watching yourself."
"Yeah," she called after me as I left the room, "I'm just practicing for covering the invaision!"
That got my attention. "Invasion?" I spluttered, spinning around.
"Well, sure... I mean, don't they see Gaia as a buffet? We're pets to them at best. More likely zoo animals...but they'd rather eat us..." She looked up from her nails and laughed. "Oh, Dawna, I was joking."
"You mean you were being glib!" I snapped, annoyed. "Well, I think that the invasion's going on right now! We'll only know it when it's too late, of course...when the aliens are about to eat us! And I'm not being glib!" I stormed upstairs in a huff.
I was still in a huff as I went to bed. And then...
Well, the next thing I knew was that I was sitting on the kitchen floor with broken cups scattered in pieces around me. Cindy was standing in the doorway, her mouth open, staring at me. I stared back. "Sleepwalk often?" she asked.
"Uh...er...what time is it?" I asked stupidly.
"Half past two," she said, looking at the clock. "I heard the most awful racket down here. I thought it was burglers, but when I came down, you were just walking around, turning everything on and moving everything... You dropped the cups when I woke you up."
"Sorry," I said quietly, trying not to think about sleepwalking. "Was I really...sleepwalking?"
"Looked like it." Cindy was looking at me worriedly. "Has this ever happened before?"
"A few times..." I muttered, getting up.
"So you're ok then?" she asked.
I nodded, even though I wasn't really.
"Watch out!" she shouted. "You'll cut your feet!" And that was the end of that.
But it wasn't really. I'm not going back to sleep. I know very well what it means for me to be sleepwalking. But for it to happen so soon... It's not even been a year since last time! Ugh...last time... I don't want that to happen again. At least I know why it's happening now...but I also know that I might not come back to normal. I might be a human-eating monster for life!
What am I going to do? Should I tell Cindy? No, what could she do? Should I even stay here? If I transform here, she'd be the only human in a long distance...not very safe. I never harmed my family in Aekea, but that was the city. It was easier to attack others!
No...I won't tell her, and I won't leave...yet. I'll see what happens tonight, and go from there. Even if I do transform tonight, I've never killed on the first night, or even done much harm. I'll lock my door and hide the key. The monster inside me isn't much good at locks... No, I'll get Cindy to lock me in. I'll use my sleepwalking as an excuse... That should work!
