Chapter One
Little Evil
Zen moments are cheap. True wisdom is coping and recognizing the subtle qualities of every situation. I believe that those famous "Zen moments" are nothing but a little glimpse of illumination. The spiritual mountaintop everyone looks up at is a falso pretense, set by the illusion that it is possible to find such a summit. Wisdom is nothing like knowing the universe, or god, or whatever. It's actively knowing how to dynamically and openly resolve issues. Confronting the self is hard, because under layers of outside personality and cognition, a part of us is completely malicious and destructive, endlessly conspiring against the world. It is an insurmountable feat of will to come away from a battle with the inner evil without losing a part of one's soul, or putting mental blocks in place to inhibit any positivity. The well being of a soul requires that the evil influences in us be routed at every event. Otherwise all negativity can come out. Anger, depression, guilt, paranoia, jealousy. All of these originate from a part of us that's uncontrolled. The christians had a way of putting it. They said that we were all basically evil. Sinners. And is some sense we are all evil and sinful. Just like in some sense we are all basically good. We are all basically evil because we shore up all our negativity and we store it in the darkest corner of our souls. And despite all the precaution involving containing so much evil, it can sometimes leak out in small spurts. But the best way to confront such evil is to not spare it the attention. It feeds off of your worry, and it empowers it. Recognize it and subvert it at every junction. Do not grant it satisfaction by letting it get to you. In a sense, civilization is the antipode of our evil. This is due to the positive teamwork and civility that comes as an effect of such a situation. People who dwell alone and stew in thier own thoughts are never positively aligned. That's because inner evil is most powerful when it has you alone. Trust and respect for others are great hinderances to the progress of evil. If you can only talk to someone when something's on your mind, then evil cannot affect you.
