Temporary Insanity
The world through my eyes.
From this thread.

Let's see if I have a better metaphor...

It's like Anime is a cake. What you SEE is the frosting so you try and duplicate that frosting. What you don't see is the cake underneath the frosting... that is what your art teachers are trying to get you to understand... the cake... what's in the cake, how to bake it, etc. You don't need to worry about the frosting until you learn to bake a cake otherwise what are you going to smear your frosting on? If it has no foundation all it is is decoration and nothing edible.

The Anime artists KNOW about cake. They had to learn to bake cakes too before they could decorate it with frosting. They have more substance to them than just the frosting. They are edible.

And you may find while baking your cake that a different frosting will make it taste better or make it look more appetizing. That's something you may not have discovered if you stuck with just trying to duplicate the Anime artist's frosting.

This is the best analogy I've seen for why anime shoudl be kept for your spare time. Kids aren't seeing the big picture as to why teachers stop them drawing anime in the classroom. By copying anime shows and only using anime tutorials, kids aren't learning the basics and how the real anime artists came to creating their style.

You wouldn't try to build a car without knowing how to change a tire would you?
