It's kind of annoying, how people need to find a new word to attach to an already popular genre of music. I totally misunderstood what I just said. Let me rephrase that then. How is it that Good Charlotte are "punk" one minute and "emo" the next? Why is that? This is just a sort of observation I've made. Based on the current trend in rock music, they have to use that word to define rock music. So basically, all the bands that were "rock" in 1999, and then "punk" in 2002, are "emo" now.
Or, as long as they have ties to Fall Out Boy/Fueled By Ramen, they're emo. Why? 'Cause Fall Out Boy is pop emo. They just don't want to call it pop. They know it is. But they want to look cool by saying they don't listen to mainstream music. Because most people tend to lean toward the fact that "pop" = popular, therefore mainstream. Guess what? Gym Class Heroes are mainstream now, like it or not. You know how that could've not been helped? By not milking the trend. But fans and the industry will continue to milk it for all it's worth. Because of this, a once fan-driven genre starts to become a lucrative ploy for the money-hungry industry. I guess it was bound to happen, and I'm just bitching. But I know I'm not alone.
Either way, the bands we once knew as our hometown heroes are global phenomenons (especially FOB), but that doesn't mean you have to get on their a** about how they changed just so they could get big. GCH, along with the rest of Fueled By Ramen's roster, are totally genuine bands, don't get me wrong. However, now that they're lumped in with the current "emo" trend, people aren't as quick to give them the credit they deserve. I'm happy for GCH and The Academy Is and CIWWAF and all those folks. Maybe you should be too.
...Yeah, I'm just bitching.
